Joey Holifield's (Toledo, Ohio/Cardinal Stritch H.S.) layup with 9.7 seconds to play gave Lourdes a 65-64 victory over Rochester (Mich.) on Monday evening inside of Garth Pleasant Arena in Rochester Hills, Mich.
With the victory, Lourdes extended its school-record win streak to 13 consecutive contests.
Lourdes led by seven with four minutes to play when the Warriors made a late run. A three-pointer by AJ Johnson made it a 62-61 Lourdes advantage with 36.1 seconds to play. Holifield was then fouled and made one of two free throws with just over a half-minute remaining.
Johnson made another triple to put Rochester on top 64-63 with 16.7 ticks remaining on the clock before Holifield drove the lane for what proved to be the game-winning basket. Johnson had a chance to tie as time expired, but his driving lay-up missed the mark.
Rochester led by as many as 12 in the game following a 13-0 run late in the half that put the Warriors on top 37-25. The Gray Wolves closed the half on a 7-0 spurt as
Charles Swain (Cincinnati, Ohio/North College Hill H.S.) scored inside and drained a triple at the end of the stanza to make it a 37-32 Warrior lead at the break.
After falling behind by nine early in the second half, Lourdes scored eight straight points to close within one, 41-40, at the 17:21 mark. An
Anthony Mills (Columbus, Ohio/Westerville South H.S.) three put Lourdes in front for the first time in the second half, 48-47. Another six straight points later in the period allowed Lourdes to build its largest lead, 60-53, heading into the closing minutes.
"They shot the ball really well in the first half," head coach
Dennis Hopson said afterwards. "They really hit some unbelievable shots and we were still only down five. We held them down in the second half, allowing them to score just 27 points."
Little Anderson (Toledo, Ohio/Cardinal Stritch H.S.) led Lourdes with 17 points while Holifield added 15 more.
Nick Welch (Temperance, Mich./Saint Mary Catholic Central H.S.) also finished in double figures with 14 points while grabbing a team-high eight rebounds.
Johnson led all scorers for Rochester (15-8, 8-5) with 27 points, including six three-pointers while Diego Robinson pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds.
Lourdes (18-3, 10-3) remains on the road Wednesday evening, traveling to Lima, Ohio to face Northwestern Ohio. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. inside of Racers Gymnasium.
