Final Results
In a match that went down to the final dual, fifth-ranked Indiana Tech pulled out a 20-16 victory over 18
th-ranked Lourdes on Saturday afternoon inside the Warrior Athletic Center in Fort Wayne, Ind.
"This was a heartbreaking match for us to lose," head coach
Dock Kelly III said afterwards. "We were in complete control of the match, and we let it slip away from us. We must push through the adversity and stay focused even when the environment is not friendly. We will learn from this loss and allow it to fuel us to get better."
Lourdes started fast as
Alex Slattman (Wauseon, Ohio/Wauseon H.S.), making his season debut, registered a fall 40 seconds into the second period at 125 pounds. After Indiana Tech scored a major decision at 133, the Gray Wolves earned back-to-back decisions.
Nick Henneman (Oregon, Ohio/Clay H.S.), ranked third in NAIA at 141, improved to 15-0 with a 6-0 shutout over 10
th-ranked Kyle Kantola.
Blake Montrie (Lambertville, Mich./Bedford H.S.), ranked 12
th, followed at 149 with a 7-3 win.
The Warriors picked up a decision at 157 before
Richard Jackson (Toledo, Ohio/Central Catholic H.S.) notched a 9-0 major decision at 165.
Noah Clary (Upper Sandusky, Ohio/Upper Sandusky H.S.), ranked 12
th at 174, followed with an 8-3 win as Lourdes built a 19-7 advantage.
Indiana Tech won the final three matches though, and the Gray Wolves were deducted three points for a flagrant misconduct, to pull out the victory.
The two schools also wrestled several extra counting matches, with
Riley Rhone (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven H.S.) picking up a 7-4 decision for the Gray Wolves at 125.
Lourdes (10-5) will close out the dual match portion of its schedule on Thursday evening as the Gray Wolves travel to Rochester Hills, Mich. to face Rochester (Mich.). The opening bout is slated for 7 p.m. inside of Garth Pleasant Arena.
