Lourdes showed few effects of a two-week layoff on Wednesday evening as the Gray Wolves extended their winning streak to seven straight games, defeating Siena Heights 76-58 inside the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center.
All seven victories during the span have been by double figures.
"Right now, the biggest thing I want to see from this team is consistency night in and night out," head coach
Dennis Hopson said afterwards. "I want the guys to do what they need to in order to prepare to win a ball game. Our big pluses tonight were committing just nine turnovers and shooting 40 free throws."
McRay White (Cleveland, Ohio/Garfield Heights H.S.) and
Joey Holifield (Toledo, Ohio/Cardinal Stritch H.S.) both registered double-doubles while
Little Anderson (Toledo, Ohio/Cardinal Stritch H.S.) registered a game-high 22 points. White tallied 16 points and grabbed 10 rebounds while Holifield had 12 points and 10 boards.
Nick Welch (Temperance, Mich./Saint Mary Catholic Central H.S.) gave Lourdes four players in double figures for the 14
th time in 15 games this year after he scored 14 points.
The lead changed hands 16 times in the opening 20 minutes with neither school having a lead larger than four until a Gray Wolf basket in the final minute of the half. Lourdes took a 33-29 lead into the locker room.
Lourdes came out of the locker room and gradually extended its lead, building a 50-39 lead with just under 12 minutes to play. The Saints scored the next 10 points in less than three minutes to pull within two, only to see the Gray Wolves answer with a 13-0 run of its own. Lourdes then maintained its double-digit lead for the final six minutes to secure the victory.
Lourdes shot just 40.3% from the floor for the evening but limited its turnover count to just nine while forcing 20 miscues from the Saints which led to 29 points. The Gray Wolves also held a 41-34 edge on the glass, including 19 on the offensive end, converting the rebounds into 18 second chance points.
Curtis Bell III led Siena Heights (4-12, 1-7 WHAC) with 16 points and eight rebounds while Kevin Rice added 12 points and had four blocks.
Lourdes (12-3, 4-3) returns to the hardwood on Saturday afternoon as the Gray Wolves travel to Livonia, Mich. to face Michigan-Dearborn. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m. inside the Alliance Catholic Credit Union Arena on the campus of Madonna University.
