Lourdes Downs Michigan-Dearborn to Secure WHAC Tournament Berth

Lourdes secured a berth in next weekend's Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference tournament next weekend with a 4-0 shutout of the University of Michigan-Dearborn on Saturday afternoon at Star International Academy in Dearborn, Mich. to conclude the regular season.

"We're starting to attack with a little more confidence and get ourselves into good scoring areas, which are really good signs," head coach Matt Johnson said afterwards.  "Dearborn as a team defends quite well and are tough to unlock, but I think Martin's early goal was really helpful in giving us confidence and forcing them to chase a bit."

The Gray Wolves scored twice in a 3:18 span in the opening half to take control of the game.  Martin Coronel (Asuncion, Paraguay/Universidad Americana) scored what proved to be the match-winner with his unassisted tally 15 minutes into the contest.  Jonas Kreutzberg (Alfter, Germany/Alexander von Humboldt Gymnasium) then sent a pass across to Diego Pereira (Asuncion, Paraguay/Cristo Rey) who scored his fourth goal of the season at the 18:18 mark.

Lourdes took the 2-0 lead into halftime despite having just a narrow 6-5 edge in shot attempts in the opening 45 minutes.

Kreutzberg added a goal of his own to start the scoring in the second half, knocking in a half-volley from Victor Espinoza (Asuncion, Paraguay/Cristo Rey) with 27:02 to play.  Andris Klempert (Hamburg, Germany/Stadtteilschule Walddorfer) concluded the scoring with just 3:30 to play, tallying an unassisted goal.

Lourdes finished the match with a 14-10 edge in shots and a 7-3 edge in corner kick opportunities.  Igor Silva (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Pentagono) made three saves in net for the Gray Wolves for his fourth career shutout and first this season.  Elijah Burlak made seven stops in the loss for Michigan-Dearborn (6-9-3, 4-5-2 WHAC).

"A little over a week ago we were kind of with our backs against the wall, but the boys have responded well with three wins and some momentum heading into the playoffs," Johnson added.  "We're thankful to have a chance to keep playing at this point, and hopefully we can extend our season a few more games."

Lourdes (6-8-4, 4-4-3) will have to wait until late Saturday evening when WHAC regular season play is completed to learn its opponent and location for next Saturday's quarterfinal round of the WHAC tournament, held at the top four seeds.
