Lourdes suffered its first home setback of the season on Wednesday evening as the Gray Wolves fell to East-West 65-56 in non-conference action inside the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center.
The Gray Wolves shot just 32.3% from the floor for the night and were 5-of-28 (17.9%) from three-point range while committing 16 turnovers. The setback marks the first time Lourdes has dropped back-to-back games since late January.
"We didn't play good basketball tonight," head coach
Dennis Hopson said afterwards. "We played afraid and didn't shoot the ball worth anything. We need to keep working to figure it out."
Joey Holifield (Toledo, Ohio/Cardinal Stritch H.S.) scored a game-high 22 points on 8-of-13 shooting while
Clif Snow (Middletown, Ohio/Middletown H.S.) notched a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
Stephen Coleman Jr. (Toledo, Ohio/Hillcrest Prep H.S.) pulled down 10 boards.
Lourdes led 12-8 five minutes into the contest when the Phantoms went on a 12-2 run to pull in front by six with just under nine minutes to play in the opening half. The Gray Wolves answered with a 15-1 spurt of their own, holding East-West without a field goal for five minutes while building their largest lead of the game, 29-21. The Phantoms would battle back before halftime, closing to within one, 31-30, at the break.
The lead would change hands nine times in the second half along with being tied four times before East-West took the lead for good. A quick 7-2 run to start the stanza put the visitors in front by four, the largest advantage either team would have in the second half until the final two minutes. With the game tied at 50 with under five minutes to play, Troy Cobb made a pair of threes to put the visitors in front for good, starting a 15-4 run over the next four minutes as the Phantoms secured the win.
Cobb led East-West (3-15) with 18 points while Devine Conley added 17 points. Jaha Jackson added 12 more off the bench for the Phantoms.
Lourdes (8-4) returns to the court Thursday evening as the Gray Wolves travel to Grand Rapids, Mich. to face Cornerstone in a make-up Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference contest. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. inside Mol Arena.
