Lourdes Scores Big WHAC Win on the Road at Cornerstone

For just the second time in program history, Lourdes went into Mol Arena in Grand Rapids, Mich. and defeated Cornerstone, downing the Golden Eagles 75-66 on Thursday evening in a make-up of a previous postponement.

"The biggest thing tonight was our defense," head coach Dennis Hopson said afterwards.  "It really helped carry us over.  We got a bit lift from Little (Anderson) and Charles (Swain) and the guys that came off the bench helped us.  We played a complete 40-minute game and were able to sustain their runs and make plays when we needed it.  We rebounded the ball well the second half as well."

Little Anderson (Toledo, Ohio/Cardinal Stritch H.S.) led the way with 19 points while Charles Swain (Cincinnati, Ohio/North College Hill H.S.) and Joey Holifield (Toledo, Ohio/Cardinal Stritch H.S.) each added 13 points.  Nic Borojevich (Swanton, Ohio/Swanton H.S.) and Jackie Harris (Toledo, Ohio/Saint Francis de Sales H.S.) each tallied 10 points as five Gray Wolves finished the game scoring in double figures.

The Lourdes defense limited the Golden Eagles to just four points over the first eight minutes of the game, building an early 10-4 advantage.  Cornerstone responded with the next 12 points, holding the Gray Wolves scoreless for more than nine minutes while taking a six-point lead with seven minutes to play before halftime.  The Gray Wolves answered with the next six points to pull even and neither team would lead by more than four the rest of the half as Cornerstone took a 27-26 lead into the locker room.

The Gray Wolves would score 13 of the first 17 points in the second half to build an eight-point advantage, 39-31, five minutes into the final period.  Cornerstone would close to within one, 43-42, at the 11:42 mark before seven straight Lourdes points pushed the edge back to eight.  The Gray Wolves would not yield the lead the rest of the way, snapping a two-game losing streak with its first victory in Mol Arena since Feb. 22, 2012.

Lourdes went 24-of-29 (82.8%) from the free throw line while Cornerstone attempted just two shots from the free throw line, making one.

Carter Nyp led Cornerstone (9-4, 5-2 WHAC) with 17 points while Cory Ainsworth and Luke Rowlinson each added 16 more for the Golden Eagles.

Lourdes (9-4, 5-3) returns home on Saturday afternoon as the Gray Wolves entertain Rio Grande in non-conference action.  Tip-off is set for 3 p.m. inside the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center.
