In a game in which neither team led by more than five points in the second half, Lawrence Tech edged out a 56-52 victory over Lourdes on Saturday afternoon inside the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center.
"I am just really proud of how well the team competed through some adversity and some adjustments we had to make," head coach
Tandy Bradford said afterwards. "We hit the boards really hard today and simply didn't convert them into points. Our focus is now winning on the road over the next two weeks."
Lawrence Tech started quickly, building its largest lead of the game, eight, late in the opening quarter. Trailing 17-11 heading into the second, Lourdes scored the first 10 points of the stanza to take a 21-17 lead, holding the Blue Devils scoreless for the first six minutes of the period. The Gray Wolves would maintain the lead throughout the remainder of the half, heading into the locker room with a 26-25 advantage.
The third quarter saw four ties and seven lead changes, with Lawrence Tech scoring the final four points of the frame to take a one-point edge into the final 10 minutes. The Blue Devils never trailed in the fourth, leading by as many as five. Lourdes tied the game at 50 on an
Emma Pedroza (Napoleon, Ohio/Napoleon H.S.) free throw with 1:26 to play.
After Lawrence Tech pushed the lead back to three, Pedroza made a lay-up with 12.0 seconds to play to pull within 53-52. After two Blue Devil free throws, Lourdes had one final shot, but the three-point try to tie came up short.
Winter Richburg (Toledo, Ohio/Rogers H.S.) led Lourdes with 10 points while Pedroza and her sister
Shae Pedroza (Napoleon, Ohio/Napoleon H.S.) each added nine points.
Halle Barnett (Sylvania, Ohio/Southview H.S.) pulled down a game-high nine rebounds as the Gray Wolves finished with a 43-29 edge on the boards. Lourdes had 17 offensive caroms in the contest.
Gabby Gough came off the bench to lead Lawrence Tech (5-6, 2-4 WHAC) with 16 points while Kendall Fisher added 13 more.
Lourdes (4-6, 2-5) begins a four-game road trip next Friday as the Gray Wolves travel to Livonia, Mich. to face Madonna. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. inside the Alliance Catholic Credit Union Arena.
