No. 10 Lourdes Scores Road Sweep at Cornerstone

Lourdes completed the season sweep of Cornerstone on Friday evening with a 25-19, 27-25, 28-26 victory over the Golden Eagles inside of Mol Arena in Grand Rapids, Mich.

The Gray Wolves hit .274 on the evening, led by 24 kills and a .467 hitting percentage from Jeff Lam (Richmond, B.C./Hugh McRoberts H.S.) while Guga Heidrich (Braco do Norte, Brazil/Colegio Unificado) led the defense with 15 digs.

"We served and passed better tonight, which allowed our offense to be a little more aggressive," head coach Greg Reitz said following the win.

Lourdes held a 9-7 lead in the opening set when Cornerstone went on a 6-1 run to take a 13-10 advantage.  The set remained close throughout, with the two schools tied at 17 before the Gray Wolves closed the set on an 8-2 spurt to win the opening set.

Cornerstone build a 12-8 lead midway through set two before the Gray Wolves responded with a 7-2 run to pull in front.  The stanza proceeded to go back and forth, with 15 ties and seven lead changes before Lourdes converted its third set point to earn the win.

Four straight points in the middle of the third set allowed the Gray Wolves to take a 13-10 lead.  Again, the set stayed close, with Lourdes fighting off a set point at 25-24 while Cornerstone held off a pair of match points before the third attempt allowed the Gray Wolves to close the match.

Eduardo Ayala (Curitiba, Brazil/Colegio Dom Bosco) added 10 kills and 11 digs on the night for Lourdes while Sawyer Schafer (Monroeville, Ohio/Monroeville H.S.) handed out 42 assists in the victory.

Max Hernandez led Cornerstone (5-9, 1-6 WHAC) with 12 kills while Patrick Voloch picked up 12 digs.

Lourdes (5-2, 4-2) will stay in Grand Rapids and have a quick turnaround before returning to the court on Saturday morning to face Aquinas.  First serve is set for 10 a.m. inside of Sturrus Sports & Fitness Center.
