Lourdes won its sixth consecutive match on Friday afternoon with a 25-15, 25-9, 26-24 sweep of Cardinal Stritch inside the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center.
The 10
th-ranked Gray Wolves hit .348 for the afternoon while limiting the Wolves to just a .102 clip. Lourdes also registered eight service aces to just one by the guests.
"We looked really smooth the first two sets," head coach
Greg Reitz said afterwards. "We passed well which led to efficient hitting and our block and defense limited their offensive production."
Leading 11-6 in the opening set, the Gray Wolves scored eight of the next 10 points to increase the advantage to 11, 19-8, and never looked back in taking the early lead in the match. Set two was all Lourdes, as the Gray Wolves hit .625 with 17 kills on just 24 swings while yielding only four kills. The Gray Wolves jumped out to an 11-2 lead and extended it to 18-4 on the way to a 2-0 lead overall.
In the third, there were eight ties and three lead changes, with Lourdes having to battle from behind. The Gray Wolves trailed 18-17 before taking the lead with the next two points. Lourdes eventually had a pair of match points which the Wolves fought off before closing out the match.
Jeff Lam (Richmond, B.C./Hugh McRoberts H.S.) had a match-high 15 kills and hit .357 while
Eduardo Ayala (Curitiba, Brazil/Colegio Dom Bosco) added 13 kills and swung at a .400 clip.
Sawyer Schafer (Monroeville, Ohio/Monroeville H.S.) handed out 34 assists while directing the offense.
Defensively,
Guga Heidrich (Braco do Norte, Brazil/Colegio Unificado) recorded 13 digs as Lourdes finished with a 43-29 edge in that category. Lam had four blocks and
Harrison McBean (Melbourne, Australia/Northern College of the Arts) was involved in three to go along with seven kills and a .583 hitting day.
Kyle Pietrzak led Cardinal Stritch (5-6) with nine kills while Brandyn Cullen had seven digs.
Lourdes (10-2) closes out its three-match homestand on Tuesday evening as the Gray Wolves host Lawrence Tech. First serve is set for 7 p.m. inside the Ebeid Rec Center.
