Lourdes forced 20 Concordia (Mich.) turnovers and limited the Cardinals to just 29.5% shooting from the floor on Wednesday evening as the Gray Wolves scored a 69-41 road victory inside of Cardinal Fieldhouse in Ann Arbor, Mich.
The Gray Wolves allowed Concordia to go to the free throw line just twice on the night and the Cardinals shot just 13.6% (3-of-22) from three-point range as well.
"We turned it up and pressured them which was key," head coach
Dennis Hopson said afterwards. "We won both halves, did a great job scoring in the paint with 46 points, and forced the 20 turnovers."
It was a slow start offensively for both schools as Concordia held a just 13-10 lead at the midway point of the opening half. Trailing 15-14 with 8:45 to play before halftime, Lourdes closed the half on an 18-5 run to build a 32-20 advantage at the break.
Lourdes scored the first eight points of the second half, keeping the Cardinals off the scoreboard for six minutes, while doubling up the hosts 40-20. Another 18-5 run pushed the lead to 32, 61-29, with under six minutes to play in the game as the Gray Wolves notched their 19
th victory of the season.
Nick Welch (Temperance, Mich./Saint Mary Catholic Central H.S.) led Lourdes with 24 points, making 12-of-17 from the field, while
Little Anderson (Toledo, Ohio/Cardinal Stritch H.S.) added 15 points.
Joey Holifield (Toledo, Ohio/Cardinal Stritch H.S.) registered a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
Lourdes had 16 assists, including five from
Brett Lauf (Napoleon, Ohio/Napoleon H.S.), while committing just eight turnovers. The Gray Wolves shot 46.3% from the floor on the night.
Matt Kohler led Concordia (9-15, 4-13 WHAC) with eight points as 26 of the Cardinals' 41 points came from their bench.
Lourdes (19-5, 11-5) returns home to the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center on Saturday afternoon as the Gray Wolves host Michigan-Dearborn. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m. with Senior Day activities taking place prior to the game.
