Upcoming in Gray Wolves Volleyball: The penultimate week of the regular season has arrived and with it comes a pair of key Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference matches for Lourdes. The Gray Wolves travel to Siena Heights on Wednesday night, looking to avenge a previous loss before hosting Goshen on Saturday afternoon.
Head Coach Greg Reitz: In his 11th season both on the Lourdes bench, and overall coaching men's volleyball,
Greg Reitz has a 205-75 (.732) record at the helm of the Gray Wolves. He has earned six conference Coach of the Year honors during his first nine seasons at Lourdes, including the WHAC Coach of the Year in 2018. He is the only head coach in program history.
Series Notes: Lourdes is 26-2 all-time against Siena Heights in a series that began Feb. 14, 2012. The Saints snapped the Gray Wolves' five-match winning streak in the series earlier this year on Feb. 1 with a straight sets victory over Lourdes inside the Ebeid Rec Center. Lourdes holds a 10-1 series edge in matches played in Adrian, Mich. The Gray Wolves hold a 6-1 series advantage against Goshen dating back to Jan. 22, 2019. Lourdes has won the last four meetings between the two schools after a five-set triumph in Goshen, Ind. on Feb. 5. The Gray Wolves are 3-1 all-time against the Maple Leafs inside the Ebeid Rec Center.
Wrapping Up Last Week: Lourdes swept Saint Ambrose 25-20, 25-19, 25-18 last Sunday (March 6) to snap a two-match losing skid.
Jeff Lam led the Gray Wolves with 13 kills and hit .455 while
Eduardo Ayala hit .400 with 11 kills.
Guga Heidrich has seven digs.
Sawyer Schafer handed out 32 assists in the win. Last Tuesday (March 8), the Gray Wolves concluded their spring trip with a 27-25, 20-25, 25-19, 25-21 victory at 14th-ranked Saint Xavier. Lam had 22 kills and hit .357 while Ayala added 11 kills. Heidrich tallied 13 digs in the victory. Schafer dished out 40 assists in the road triumph.
Scouting Siena Heights: The Saints had their four-match winning streak snapped on Sunday afternoon, dropping a five-set decision at Mount Saint Joseph. Ramon Matos leads Siena Heights with 258 kills and a .300 hitting percentage while adding 24 aces. Zak Tucker has handed out 580 assists. Defensively, Joudiel Poveymirow has a team-high 213 digs for the Saints while Jakob Pickett has been involved in 59 blocks.
Scouting Goshen: The Maple Leafs have won five of their last six matches entering the week following a sweep at Adrian last Tuesday (March 8). Goshen faces Lawrence Tech in a home-and-home series Tuesday and Wednesday before visiting Lourdes. Alexander Rabadzhiev leads the Maple Leafs with 317 kills and a .300 hitting percentage while also registering 34 service aces. Michael Wahl has handed out 805 assists. Defensively, Brayton Yoder has recorded 233 digs while Andy Bennett has 82 blocks, including 19 of the solo variety.
A New Record Holder: Jeff Lam broke the school's career kills record earlier this season against Lawrence Tech. He surpassed Evan Gebert (2017-2020), who tallied 1,179 during his four years at Lourdes. Lam enters play this week with 1,316 kills over his five seasons wearing the terra cotta and black.
Lam Also Holds Aces Mark: Jeff Lam set the school record for career aces last season and continues to add to his total this year. He enters the week with 156 career aces. The fifth-year senior has 69 more than Evan Gebert (2017-2020), who ranks second on the Gray Wolves' all-time list.
Climbing the Blocks List: Jeff Lam and
Harrison McBean rank fifth and sixth respectively on the Gray Wolves' career blocks list. Lam enters the week with 165 total rejections while McBean has 154 career blocks. Julian Rivera (2013-2016) is fourth on the all-time charts with 188 blocks.
Lots of Digs: Guga Heidrich has moved into four place on Lourdes all-time dig list. The Gray Wolf senior has 666 career digs over his three seasons with the Gray Wolves and is now chasing Eric Ubior (2015-2018), who is in third place all-time with 755 digs.
Moving Up: In his first season in the setter's role,
Sawyer Schafer has already climbed into seventh place on the Gray Wolves' assists list with 597. He is now chasing sixth place which is held by Amaury Miranda (2015) who had 893.
In the National Rankings: Lourdes is fourth as a team among all NAIA schools this season tallying 11.25 digs per set. Offensively, the Gray Wolves rank eighth nationally putting down 12.46 kills per stanza while the team's 11.78 assists per stanza are sixth best nationally. Lourdes also ranks 12th recording 1.92 service aces per set.
Double-Doubles: Jeff Lam has a team-leading six double-doubles this season, all of the kills and digs variety.
Eduardo Ayala also has a pair of double-doubles, both with kills and digs as well.
This and That: The Gray Wolves have yielded just 55 service aces (0.93/set) thus far this season defensively ... Lourdes has won both five set matches it has played this season and has won four straight dating back to its last five-set loss in 2020.
