Lourdes posted a doubleheader sweep of Shawnee State on Wednesday afternoon, defeating the Bears 7-5 and 9-2 at Branch Rickey Park in Portsmouth, Ohio.
Â
The Gray Wolves have now won five consecutive games and eight of their last nine overall.
Â
"We played two complete games today," head coach
Josh Bradford said afterwards. "We played great defense and got some big hits. We pitched well too, especially Joey in game two. He got hit around a little bit in the second inning, worked his way through it, and gave up just two runs. He then went on to pitch four scoreless innings."
Â
Josh Hare (Simcoe, Ont./Holy Trinity H.S.) tied the opener at one with a RBI double in the second inning before adding a runs-coring single as part of a two-run fourth. Shawnee State answered with two in the bottom of the fourth to take a 4-3 lead before the Gray Wolves plated four in the sixth.
Â
Matt McEachern (Burlington, Ont./Hayden Secondary) had a pinch-hit single in the sixth to tie the game before a fielder's choice off the bat of
Caleb Dugan (Lima, Ohio/Lima Senior H.S.) put the Gray Wolves in front. Another fielder's choice by
Gabe Scott (Curtis, Ohio/Genoa H.S.) increased the lead before
Steve Haugh (Waterville, Ohio/Anthony Wayne H.S.) added a sacrifice fly.
Â
Hare went 3-for-4 in the opener while
Joey Oehlers (Lambertville, Mich./Bedford H.S.) added a pair of hits as Lourdes tallied seven in the contest.
Â
Anderson Strunk (New Baltimore, Mich./Algonac H.S.) earned the win (1-1) allowing four runs on seven hits while striking out six.Â
Austin Ford (Chesterfield, Mich./Anchor Bay H.S.) came on in the seventh to earn the save.
Â
Shawnee State (7-13) jumped in front in game two with a pair of second inning runs before Oehlers shut the Bears down, allowing seven hits and no walks while striking out seven in six innings of work.
Â
Haugh tied the game with a two-run home run in the third before the Gray Wolves scored five in fourth. Lourdes took advantage of an error to score three unearned runs and added two more in the sixth on
Brad Ammons (Holland, Ohio/Springfield H.S.) home run.
Â
Haugh,
Ryan Jagodzinski (Perrysburg, Ohio/Rossford H.S.), and
Harrison Jackson (Millbury, Ohio/Lake H.S.) all had two hits in game two as the Gray Wolves registered nine in total.
Â
Lourdes (13-5) will now travel to Aquinas on Sunday for a doubleheader to open Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play. The games have been pushed back from Saturday, thus forcing the cancellation of the home opener against Roosevelt. First pitch in game one against the Saints is set for 1 p.m.
