Lourdes extended its winning streak to six consecutive wins with a 5-4 victory over Aquinas in game one of Sunday's doubleheader at DeWitt Field in Grand Rapids, Mich. before the Saints snapped the streak with an 11-3 victory over the Gray Wolves in game two to open Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play.
Â
The Gray Wolves started quickly in the opener as
Joey Oehlers (Lambertville, Mich./Bedford H.S.) delivered a two-run single with two outs in the top of the first to put Lourdes in front.
Â
Aquinas responded with three runs in the bottom of the frame before the Gray Wolves tied the game in the second.Â
Ryan Jagodzinski's (Perrysburg, Ohio/Rossford H.S.) ground out plated an unearned run evening the game at three.
Â
Lourdes took the lead in the fourth as a Jagodzinski fielder's choice scored
Caleb Dugan (Lima, Ohio/Lima Senior H.S.). The Saints answered in the fifth and the game stayed tied until the seventh. Dugan drew a bases loaded, two out walk to score pinch runner
Thad Niziolek (Holland, Mich./West Ottawa H.S.) with what proved to be the winning run.
Â
Austin Ford (Chesterfield, Mich./Anchor Bay H.S.) earned the win (2-0) with 2.2 innings of scoreless relief in the opener.Â
Caleb Loboschefski (Maumee, Ohio/Maumee H.S.) started and went 4.1 innings, scattering nine hits and four runs.
Â
"We pitched well in game one," head coach
Josh Bradford said afterwards. "Austin picked us up huge. Caleb got into a little trouble in the fifth. Austin came in, got us out of it, then finished the game without giving up a run."
Â
The Gray Wolves took the lead in the first inning of game two as well.Â
Gabe Scott (Curtis, Ohio/Genoa H.S.) homered as the second batter of the game.
Â
Aquinas plated two in the second before Lourdes tied the game in the top of the fourth as
Brad Ammons (Holland, Ohio/Springfield H.S.) led off the inning with a home run.
Â
A six-run bottom of the fourth pushed Aquinas (10-16, 1-1 WHAC) in front for good. Six of the first seven batters reached in the inning as the Saints sent 11 batters to the plate in the inning.
Â
Lourdes scored an unearned run in the top of the fifth but that would be it for the Gray Wolves' offense in game two. Aquinas tacked on a run in the bottom of the fifth and two more in the sixth on the way to the win.
Â
"In game two we got hit around a little bit," Bradford added. "Offensively we did not have enough good at bats to overcome the deficit. We have to do a better job of sticking to our plan and offensive philosophy."
Â
Lourdes (14-6, 1-1) will open the home portion of its schedule on Thursday afternoon as the Gray Wolves entertain Grace Christian. First pitch in game one of the doubleheader is set for 1 p.m.
