Gray Wolves In Search of Third Straight WHAC Tournament Title

Upcoming in Gray Wolves Volleyball: Postseason play has arrived for the 10th-ranked Lourdes Gray Wolves.  Lourdes heads into the WHAC tournament as the second seed and will face third-seeded Aquinas on Friday evening in Fort Wayne, Ind.  The title match is slated for Saturday afternoon.

Head Coach Greg Reitz: In his 11th season both on the Lourdes bench, and overall coaching men's volleyball, Greg Reitz has a 207-77 (.729) record at the helm of the Gray Wolves.  He has earned six conference Coach of the Year honors during his first nine seasons at Lourdes, including the WHAC Coach of the Year in 2018.  He is the only head coach in program history.

Series Notes: The Gray Wolves hold a 6-3 series advantage against Aquinas dating back to March 1, 2019.  The two schools split the 2022 regular season meetings, with Lourdes winning in four sets at Aquinas and the Saints posting a five-set victory in Sylvania, Ohio in the regular season finale.  In the only previous neutral site meeting, Aquinas earned a 3-0 triumph on April 17, 2019 in Des Moines, Iowa at the NAIA National Championships.  Lourdes and Indiana Tech are tied 3-3 in a series that began Jan. 25, 2020.  The Warriors swept this season's regular season meetings, winning in three sets in Sylvania and in five sets in Fort Wayne, Ind.  The Warriors hold a 2-1 series edge in Fort Wayne, Ind.    Lourdes is 27-2 all-time against Siena Heights dating back to Feb. 14, 2012.  The two schools split this year's regular season meetings, with each winning on the other's home floor.  They have met on a neutral court twice, both in 2019 in chandler, Ariz. with the Gray Wolves winning both times as part of the NAIA Independent Group tournament.

Wrapping Up Last Week: Lourdes battled back to force a fifth set on Wednesday before falling 25-23, 25-27, 25-16, 22-25, 15-12 at Indiana Tech.  Jeff Lam had 23 kills and 15 digs while Guga Heidrich added 19 digs.  On Saturday, Aquinas spoiled the Gray Wolves' Senior Night with a 16-25, 25-20, 22-25, 25-23, 17-15 victory in the Ebeid Rec Center.  Eduardo Ayala had 27 kills and hit .300 while Lam tallied 16 kills and 17 digs.

Scouting Aquinas: The Saints enter the tournament having won 10 straight contests after downing Lourdes in five sets on Saturday.  Julian Armendano leads Aquinas with 454 kills and a .320 attack percentage.  Joshua Boothroyd leads Aquinas with 42 service aces while Matthew Richmond has dished out a team-high 860 assists.  On defense, Kelsey Yogi has recorded 276 digs while Daniel De La Rosa has 111 blocks, including 15 solos.

Scouting Indiana Tech: The Warriors enter the tournament having won 11 straight matches after downing Wittenberg in straight sets on Sunday.  Daynte Stewart leads Indiana Tech with 346 kills and is hitting .305 while Mason Milan has 36 service aces.  Brandon Jones has handed out a team-high 694 assists.  Defensively, Joey Hermes has 333 digs while Raekwon Rogers has 114 blocks, including 29 of the solo variety.

Scouting Siena Heights: The Saints enter the tournament following a five-set victory over Mount Vernon Nazarene on Saturday.  Ramon Matos leads Siena Heights with 339 kills while hitting .280.  Matos also has a team-high 26 service aces.  Zak Tucker leads the Saints with 747 assists.  Defensively, Joudiel Poveymirow has a team-leading 275 digs while Jakob Pickett has registered 78 blocks.

Looking for a Three-Peat: Lourdes is looking for its third consecutive Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference title.  The Gray Wolves are 4-0 all-time in the event, defeating Aquinas in the championship match in 2019 and Indiana Tech in the title tilt in 2021.  The 2020 tournament was cancelled due to COVID-19.

Career Record Holder: Jeff Lam broke the school's career kills record earlier this season against Lawrence Tech.  He surpassed Evan Gebert (2017-2020), who tallied 1,179 during his four years at Lourdes.  Lam enters the tournament with 1,399 kills over his five seasons wearing the terra cotta and black.  

Lam Also Holds Aces Mark: Jeff Lam set the school record for career aces last season and continues to add to his total this year.  He enters the week with 161 career aces.  The fifth-year senior has 74 more than Evan Gebert (2017-2020), who ranks second on the Gray Wolves' all-time list.

Climbing the Blocks List:  Jeff Lam and Harrison McBean rank fifth and sixth respectively on the Gray Wolves' career blocks list.  Lam enters the tournament with 177 total rejections while McBean has 162 career blocks.  Julian Rivera (2013-2016) is fourth on the all-time charts with 188 blocks.

Lots of Digs: Guga Heidrich has moved into four place on Lourdes all-time dig list.  The Gray Wolf senior has 723 career digs over his three seasons with the Gray Wolves and is now chasing Eric Ubior (2015-2018), who is in third place all-time with 755 digs.

Moving Up: In his first season in the setter's role, Sawyer Schafer has already climbed into seventh place on the Gray Wolves' assists list with 803.  He is now chasing sixth place which is held by Amaury Miranda (2015) who had 893.

This and That: The Gray Wolves have yielded just 74 service aces (0.9/set) thus far this season defensively ... Lourdes ranks seventh in NAIA with 12.54 kills/set and are fourth with 11.97 assists/set ... the Gray Wolves also rank fourth nationally with 11.33 digs/set ... Lourdes is 2-4 against NAIA top-15 teams this season and 39-59 all-time against nationally-ranked foes.
