Lourdes offense combined for just one run and 13 hits between two games on Sunday afternoon as Lawrence Tech swept both games of a doubleheader from the Gray Wolves 6-0 and 2-1 at Mercy Field.
The opener was scoreless until the sixth, as
Caleb Loboschefski (Maumee, Ohio/Maumee H.S.) limited the Blue Devils to just two hits through five. Lawrence Tech broke through in the sixth, sending 10 batters to the plate and scoring the game's only six runs to take control.
Lourdes was held off the base paths after falling behind as Ben Schmidt tossed a complete game shutout, yielding just five hits while striking out five.
Loboschefski suffered the loss (3-2), allowing five runs on six hits in 5.2 innings of work while striking out four.
In game two, Lawrence Tech (15-14, 7-3 WHAC) scored on a two-out single in the second and added a squeeze bunt in the fourth to take a 2-0 lead.
Lourdes finally found the scoreboard in the eighth.
Steve Haugh (Waterville, Ohio/Anthony Wayne H.S.) singled home
Josh Hare (Simcoe, Ont./Holy Trinity H.S.) with two outs. Haugh finished 3-for-4 in game two and had four total hits on the afternoon.
Joey Oehlers (Lambertville, Mich./Bedford H.S.) started and allowed just two runs on six hits while striking out five in 7.2 innings but suffered the loss (4-1) for the Gray Wolves. Jeremy Flatery yielded just the one run on seven hits in eight innings to pick up the win (5-0) while Matt Olson tossed a scoreless ninth for the save.
Hare and Oehlers each had two hits as well for Lourdes in game two, as the Gray Wolves tallied eight total for the contest.
"I feel like Caleb and Joey each gave us great starts today," head coach
Josh Bradford said afterwards. "If they continue to pitch that way, we will win more often than not. We didn't give ourselves many chances offensively. We had very few at bats with runners in scoring position and we didn't create any pressure on their pitchers and defense."
Lourdes (20-12, 5-5) will return to the diamond on Monday afternoon as the Gray Wolves entertain Michigan-Dearborn. First pitch in game one of the doubleheader is set for 1 p.m. at Mercy Field.
