Lourdes set a new school record for victories in a season on Saturday with an 8-2 win over Cornerstone in game one of a doubleheader at Mercy Field before dropping the nightcap 13-4.
The Gray Wolves now have 23 wins on the year, surpassing the previous mark of 22 set by the 2018 squad that finished the year 22-23.
"We came out today like we need to every game day," head coach
Josh Bradford said afterwards. "Caleb (Loboschefski) got us off to a great start with his outing in game one. We were putting together some good at bats, then Gabe (Scott) got us the big one to extend our lead. It was a good day to be a hitter at Mercy Field. We have to give Cornerstone some credit in game two. Joey (Oehlers) hasn't gotten hit all season. They got hits and beat us. We swung it okay, hit a lot of balls hard, just right at them."
After Cornerstone scored a run in the top of the first of game one, Lourdes answered right away.
Steve Haugh (Waterville, Ohio/Anthony Wayne H.S.) walked with two outs and scored on a single by
Josh Hare (Simcoe, Ont./Holy Trinity H.S.) that got away from the outfielder.
Lourdes took the lead for good in the fifth, sending 10 batters to the plate.
Andrew McManus (Rossford, Ohio/Rossford H.S.) singled home the go ahead run before
Gabe Scott (Curtis, Ohio/Genoa H.S.) hit a grand slam to right for his fourth round-tripper of the season.
After the Golden Eagles plated one in the top of the fifth, Lourdes answered with another in the bottom of the inning.
Harrison Jackson (Millbury, Ohio/Lake H.S.) doubled and eventually scored on a wild pitch. Haugh then tripled to lead off the sixth and scored one batter later on a Hare sacrifice fly to complete the scoring.
Caleb Loboschefski (Maumee, Ohio/Maumee H.S.) went the distance for the win (4-2), scattering just four hits while striking out seven.
The Gray Wolves took the early lead in game two.
Matt McEachern's (Burlington, Ont./Hayden Secondary) groundout plated Jackson, who tripled to lead off the second, and Hare grounded out in the third to score Scott, giving Lourdes a 2-0 lead.
Cornerstone 17-17, 9-6 WHAC) tied the game with two in the fourth before scoring four times in the fifth to take the lead for good. Haugh had a RBI single in the bottom of the fifth to make it a 6-3 game only to see the Golden Eagles respond again with a single tally in the sixth.
Lourdes scored its final run in the bottom of the sixth on a single by
Ryan Jagodzinski (Perrysburg, Ohio/Rossford H.S.), scoring McEachern. Cornerstone would add another in the seventh and break the game open with five more in the eighth.
Scott finished with three hits in game two as Lourdes tallied 11 for the contest.
Lourdes (23-15, 8-8) begins a seven-game road trip on Wednesday afternoon with a trip to Point Park. First pitch in game one of the doubleheader is set for noon at Point Park Field in Green Tree, Pa.
