Lourdes assured itself of its first winning season in program history on Tuesday afternoon as the Gray Wolves defeated Ohio Christian 8-4 at Olson Field in Circleville, Ohio.
Jake Boyd (West Jefferson, Ohio/West Jefferson H.S.) pitched six innings of shutout baseball, allowing just three hits to earn the win (4-5), striking out four without walking a batter.
"Jake pitched awesome today," head coach
Josh Bradford said afterwards. "We had a lot of baserunners all game. We finally broke through and had a big offensive inning in the eighth."
The Gray Wolves took the lead in the fourth as
Josh Hare (Simcoe, Ont./Holy Trinity H.S.) and
Steve Haugh (Waterville, Ohio/Anthony Wayne H.S.) drew back-to-back two-out, bases loaded walks.
Ohio Christian (10-30) scored a run in the seventh to cut the Lourdes lead in half before the Gray Wolves exploded for six runs in the eighth, sending 11 batters to the plate.
Caelan Cunningham (Port Dover, Ont./Holy Trinity Catholic H.S.) delivered a two-run double before a passed ball scored a third run. Haugh added a RBI single before
Brad Ammons (Holland, Ohio/Springfield H.S.) delivered a two-run single for his second hit of the inning to break the game open.
The Trailblazers would score two runs in the bottom of the eighth and add another in the ninth. Ohio Christian brought the tying run to the plate with the bases loaded in the ninth but
Austin Ford (Chesterfield, Mich./Anchor Bay H.S.) got a strikeout to end the game.
Ammons had three hits on the day while Cunningham and
Ryan Jagodzinski (Perrysburg, Ohio/Rossford H.S.) added two hits each as part of a 10-hit attack for the Gray Wolves.
Lourdes (24-21) will close out the 2022 season on Saturday afternoon, hosting Siena Heights for Senior Day. First pitch in game one is set for 1 p.m. at Mercy Field.
