For the second straight day Lourdes allowed game one of a doubleheader to get away before rebounding with a victory in the night cap, as the Gray Wolves split with Concordia (Mich.) on Sunday, falling 8-7 before winning game two 6-4 at Cardinal Field in Ann Arbor, Mich.
Â
"We put ourselves in a position to win both games today," head coach
Josh Bradford said afterwards. "We were not able to close it out in game one. We got the leader early in game two and were able to tack on a couple more as the game went on."
Â
Concordia struck first in the opener with a run in the second before
Harrison Jackson (Millbury, Ohio/Lake H.S.) tied the game with a RBI double in the top of the fourth. The Cardinals answered with a pair in the bottom of the inning, taking a 3-1 lead to the fifth.
Â
Gabe Scott (Curtis, Ohio/Genoa H.S.) tied the game in the top of the fifth with a two-run home run before
Matt McEachern (Burlington, Ont./Hayden Secondary H.S.) singled home
Steve Haugh (Waterville, Ohio/Anthony Wayne H.S.) to put the Gray Wolves in front. Haugh added a two-run single of his own in the sixth before
Josh Hare (Simcoe, Ont./Holy Trinity H.S.) delivered a RBI hit, giving Lourdes a 7-3 lead.
Â
Concordia scored three times in the bottom of the sixth to pull within a run. With two outs in the seventh, the Cardinals stole home to tie the game before winning the contest on a throwing error.
Â
The Cardinals jumped in front with a run in the second inning of game two as well before Lourdes found the scoreboard. In the third, Hare had a two-run double to put the Gray Wolves in front. Hare hit a solo shot in the fifth before
Michael Strzelewicz (Temperance, Mich./Saint Mary's Catholic Central H.S.) added a solo homer of his own in the sixth to increase the lead to 5-1.
Â
Concordia (23-11, 5-3 WHAC) closed to within one with three runs in the sixth, but Lourdes added an insurance tally in the eighth as Strzelewicz lofted a sacrifice fly to right.
Â
Joey Oehlers (Lambertville, Mich./Bedford H.S.) went seven innings to earn the win (4-0), striking out three while allowing four runs on seven hits.Â
Jagger Geck (Algonac, Mich./Algonac H.S.) tossed two scoreless frames to pick up the save.
Â
"We got big home runs by Josh and Michael," Bradford added of game two. "Joey was great on the mound and Jagger did a great job of closing it out."
Â
Lourdes (20-8, 5-3) has reached the 20-win plateau for just the second time in program history. The Gray Wolves return to the diamond on Tuesday afternoon hosting Mount Vernon Nazarene. First pitch in game one of the doubleheader is set for 2 p.m. at Mercy Field.
