Lourdes stepped out of Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play on Tuesday afternoon and dropped its first home games of the season, falling to Mount Vernon Nazarene 12-3 and 7-1 at Mercy Field.
Nathan Meikle limited the Gray Wolves to just one run and two hits over the first six innings in the opener as Lourdes finished the game with juts four hits while committing four errors defensively that led to five unearned runs.
Mount Vernon Nazarene jumped in front with a pair of runs in the opening inning before batting around in the third to score five times before a hitter was retired.
Caelan Cunningham (Port Dover, Ont./Holy Trinity Catholic H.S.) put the Gray Wolves on the scoreboard with their first hit of the day, an inside the park home run after a pair of outfielders collided diving for the ball.
The Cougars added an unearned run in the fourth and sixth innings and three more unearned tallies in the fifth to increase the lead to 12-1. Lourdes scored two runs in the seventh as part of back-to-back bases loaded walks, including one to Cunningham for his second RBI of the game.
The visitors jumped in front early in game two as well, scoring a two-out double in the second before adding two unearned runs in the third following a pair of Gray Wolf errors.
Ryan Jagodzinski (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg H.S.) singled home
Josh Hare (Simcoe, Ont./Holy Trinity H.S.) with two outs in the fourth for Lourdes only run of the game.
Mount Vernon Nazarene (23-10) added three in the fifth and another in the sixth to close out the scoring.
Lourdes had just six hits in game two, including a pair by
Bryce Gargus (South Haven, Mich./South Haven H.S.), five of which came off the starter Austin Brown who worked 5.1 innings allowing just the one unearned run. Three of the Cougars seven runs were unearned in the nightcap following three Gray Wolf errors.
Lourdes (20-10) continues its homestand with a return to Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play on Saturday afternoon as the Gray Wolves entertain Michigan-Dearborn. First pitch in game one of the doubleheader is set for 3 p.m.
