Goals Early and Late Spoil Season Opener for Lourdes

Georgetown (Ky.) found the back of the net less than five minutes into the match and then again with less than five minutes remaining in the contest as the Tigers downed Lourdes 2-0 at Wildcat Stadium in the season opener for both schools.

The physical match also saw a combined 10 cards, nine yellow and one red, as Lourdes fell to 5-2-1 all-time in season openers.

"We were a little disconnected and flat early on and Georgetown punished us," head coach Matt Johnson said afterwards.  "As we got our feet underneath us we had some good moments, but were very disappointed in the last 20 or 25 minutes.  We talk about managing our emotions throughout games, but certainly the talk is always easy.  We'll learn our lesson from it and hopefully be back stronger next week."

The Tigers scored quickly as Jake McKettrick won the ball along the endline to the right of the goal and sent a cross into the goalmouth where Lucas Cadiz connected for the first goal of the season just 4:16 into the match.

Georgetown (1-0) took a 1-0 lead into intermission despite Lourdes outshooting the Tigers 6-4.

The match remained a one-goal contest until 3:42 to play when McKettrick drove down the left sideline in a two-on-one situation and sent a ball into the middle where Evan Howard collected and fired from 20 yards out for Georgetown's insurance tally.

Lourdes again outshot the Tigers 6-4 in the second half to finish with a 12-8 edge for the match, but was unable to beat Georgetown netminder Theren Handlon, who made seven saves, including a pair of diving stops in the second half.

All three of Leon Eisert's (Leipzig, Germany/Kathe-Kollwitz Gymnasium) shot attempts were on goal while Anthony Samuel (Chaguanas, Trinidad & Tobago/Chaguanas H.S.) had two of his three shots on net to pace the Lourdes offense.

Alex Brock (Sylvania, Ohio/Southview H.S.) made two saves between the posts for the Gray Wolves in his Lourdes debut.

Lourdes (0-1) will take to the road for the first time in 2022 on Wednesday evening as the Gray Wolves travel to Goshen, Ind. to face Goshen College.  Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at the Goshen Soccer Complex.
