Despite scoring the first goal of the match for the second straight match, Lourdes suffered a 4-2 road setback at Marian on Saturday afternoon at St. Vincent Field in Indianapolis, Ind.
Â
"Outside of one really good moment when we scored the early goal, I thought it was a very flat start, and a poor first half, really" head coach
Matt Johnson said afterwards. "They pressed us effectively and we really struggled to deal with it. We were able to get on the ball more in the second half, but it's difficult to get out of a hole like we dug for ourselves, particularly against a team with the quality Marian has. Hopefully we'll have a few more players available soon, as it's a challenging week in front of us with two road matches."
Â
The Gray Wolves jumped in front 14:18 into the contest as
Hussein Sbeiti (Dearborn, Mich./Dearborn H.S.) slipped a pass behind the Knights defense to
Anthony Samuel (Chaguanas, Trinidad & Tobago), who finished at the far post.
Â
Marian tied the match in the 23
rd minute as Jalen Rice found the back of the net. Marian would take the lead just under 11 minutes later on a Kameron Hooker goal and the hosts would add a third tally before halftime as Evan Dawdy scored. The Knights held an 11-2 shot advantage in the opening 45 minutes.
Â
Dylann Merchand extended the Marian (2-0-1) advantage to 4-1 with his goal at the 69:00 mark. The Gray Wolves would respond just 37 seconds later.Â
Diego Pereira (Asuncion, Paraguay/Cristo Rey) made a run down the left side around two defenders and cut the ball back to Sbeiti who was able to score over the diving netminder.
Â
Lourdes was unable to get any closer over the final 20 minutes though. Marian finished the match with a 17-13 shot advantage.Â
Alex Brock (Sylvania, Ohio/Southview H.S.) made six saves in goal for the Gray Wolves while Brendan Weiger made one first half stop for the Knights and Alvaro Ruedo had three more over the final 45 minutes.
Â
Lourdes (0-2-1) will continue its road trip on Wednesday evening as the Gray Wolves travel to CH4 Stadium in Mount Vernon, Ohio to battle Mount Vernon Nazarene. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
