Lourdes continued its four-match road trip on Wednesday afternoon, dropping a 4-1 decision to Mount Vernon Nazarene at CH4 Stadium in Mount Vernon, Ohio.
Anthony Samuel (Chaguanas, Trinidad & Tobago/Chaguanas H.S.) scored for the third straight match, but the Gray Wolves were unable to pick up their first victory of the year.
"We were much better on the ball today than Saturday, and I was happier with our ability to keep possession," head coach
Matt Johnson said afterwards. "That said, Mount Vernon did a great job of keeping us in front of them and creating chances on the counter. They had a couple of wingers that we struggled to contain. We still need to improve our quality in crucial moments."
The Cougars found the back of the net first, as Keon Boney sent a through ball past the Lourdes defense to Zack Bowser, who finished far post.
Lourdes responded less than six minutes later.
Diego Pereira (Asuncion, Paraguay/Cristo Rey H.S.) dribbled through the Mount Vernon Nazarene defense and sent the ball to the end line where
Jonas Kreutzberg (Alfter, Germany/Alexander von Humboldt Gymnasium) collected and sent a cross through the box to Samuel who finished for his third tally of the year.
Mount Vernon Nazarene (4-0) would take the lead with just 2:15 to play before intermission as Tiago DeJesus turned around in traffic and fired into the upper 90 from the corner of the penalty area.
The hosts added to the lead just 34 seconds out of halftime as Bowser scored his second goal of the match on a penalty kick. Lourdes was assessed a red card in the 54
th minute and 13 seconds later Aaron Jolly made it 4-1. Lourdes, playing a man down the rest of the way, was unable to battle back.
The Cougars outshot Lourdes 11-8 for the match, with
Igor Silva (Sao Paul, Brazil/Colegio Pentagono) making three saves in goal for the Gray Wolves while Joshua Dunn made the same number of stops for Mount Vernon Nazarene.
Lourdes (0-3-1) will wrap up its road trip on Saturday afternoon as the Gray Wolves head to Huntington, Ind. to face Huntington. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. at King Stadium.
