Lourdes recorded its fifth three-set sweep of the season on Saturday afternoon as the Gray Wolves defeated Georgetown (Ky.) 25-21, 25-23, 25-15 inside the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center in the team's final non-conference match for nearly a month.
Â
All eight contests the Gray Wolves have played this season have resulted in 3-0 sweeps, one way or another.
Â
"Again, our serve and pass helped us distribute the ball well to our hitters," head coach
Greg Reitz said afterwards. "Our block and defense allowed us the ability to score a lot of points in transition."
Â
Lourdes served up 10 aces while committing just two service errors on the afternoon.Â
Finley Coghlan (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville H.S.) and
Abby Gentile (Blissfield, Mich./Blissfield H.S.) each had four aces.
Â
Georgetown jumped out to a quick 6-2 lead in the opening set and held a 13-9 advantage when the Gray Wolves went on a run. A 9-1 spurt behind the service of
Lydia Landoll (Monroeville, Ohio/Monroeville H.S.) and Gentile allowed Lourdes to take the lead for good in the opener.
Â
Lourdes built a 14-8 lead in the second set and held a 24-20 edge before the Tigers battled back to within a point. A Georgetown attack error, one of 27 offensive miscues by the visitors in the match, allowed the Gray Wolves to close the set and take a 2-0 lead in the match.
Â
Coghlan served up the first five points of the third set and Gentile went on another 5-0 run, including a pair of aces, as Lourdes hit a match-high .280 in the final set to complete the sweep.
Â
Coghlan had a team-high seven kills for Lourdes as the Gray Wolves hit .200 for the match.Â
Ella Lewis (Scotts, Mich./Portage Northern H.S.) added five more.Â
Katey Stakolich (Parma, Ohio/Normandy H.S.) handed out 13 assists while Gentile dished out 10 running the offense.
Â
Defensively,
Alli Plasencio (Toledo, Ohio/Central Catholic H.S.) recorded 18 digs while
Quinn Olding (Fort Wayne, Ind./Northrup H.S.) and
Macey Zinser (Bucyrus, Ohio/Wynford H.S.) each were involved in four blocks.
Â
Makena Walker led Georgetown (2-10) with nine kills while Reese Speed added nine digs for the Tigers.
Â
Lourdes (5-3) begins a three-match road trip on Wednesday evening as the Gray Wolves travel to Lima, Ohio to battle Northwestern Ohio. First serve is set for 7 p.m. inside of Racer Gymnasium.
