Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Lourdes First Victory of 2022 is #100 for Johnson

Lourdes registered its first win of the 2022 season on Wednesday afternoon as the Gray Wolves defeated Holy Cross (Ind.) 1-0 at Wildcat Stadium for head coach Matt Johnson's 100th career victory.

"Holy Cross is a good team," Johnson said afterwards.  They have some very athletic players and are well-coached.  We talked at halftime about being okay with the game being a little scrappy and disjointed as long as we got the defensive side right.  Credit to our guys for staying focused on that task and grinding out a win that was difficult, particularly towards the end.  The last couple of games we were good on the ball and carried play well but lacked a little bit of the dog work and fight to protect a lead, so it was good to see us show that side.  Hopefully we can carry a bit of confidence into Point Park."

The Gray Wolves scored the lone goal of the match at the 30:49 mark.  Daniel Mirlach (Windach, Germany/Ignaz Kogler Gymnasium) played a ball ahead to Jonas Kreutzberg (Alfter, Germany/Alexander von Humboldt Gymnasium) who scored his first career goal at Lourdes.  For Mirlach, it was also his first collegiate point.

Lourdes had a 4-0 shot advantage over the opening 45 minutes and finished the match with a 9-2 edge.  Alex Brock (Sylvania, Ohio/Southview H.S.) was not forced to make a save for his first shutout as a Gray Wolf.  Claudio Fuentealba made three stops for Holy Cross (2-2).

Johnson, who is in his 12th season as a men's collegiate head coach, picked up his 100th career victory, 25 of which have come at Lourdes.

Lourdes (1-4-1) will close out the non-conference portion of the schedule on Saturday afternoon hosting Point Park.  Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. at Wildcat Stadium.
