Lourdes saw its six-game regular season win streak come to an end on Saturday afternoon, falling at home to Cornerstone 91-84 inside the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center.
"We got sloppy at times tonight," head coach
Dennis Hopson said afterwards. We refused to guard them and let them shoot 57% from the floor. Give them credit though, they have some guys that can shoot. They also killed us on the boards 43-27."
Lourdes jumped in front 15-6 less than five minutes into the game, only to see the Golden Eagles respond with an 11-2 run to tie the game three minutes later. The Gray Wolves rebuilt a four-point lead before Cornerstone went on another 14-5 spurt to take its largest lead of the first half, 37-32. Lourdes would close the first half with a 9-2 run of its own though, taking a 41-39 advantage into the locker room.
Cornerstone scored the first four points of the second half and Lourdes never led the rest of the way. Seven straight points by the Golden Eagles pushed their lead to 50-43 four minutes into the stanza. Lourdes would pull within two, only to see Cornerstone score seven more in a row.
The Cornerstone lead reached double figures, 66-56, with 8:45 to play, and was as many as 12, 75-63, with 5:42 remaining. Lourdes battled back, with a
Jackie Harris (Toledo, Ohio/Saint Francis de Sales H.S.) cutting the deficit to six, 78-72, with a three-pointer at the four-minute mark.
Clif Snow (Middletown, Ohio/Middletown H.S.) followed with a triple of his own with three minutes left to make it a four-point game. Lourdes had a chance to cut the deficit even further, but a turnover and free throws allowed Cornerstone to regain control. The Golden Eagles would go 8-for-8 from the charity stripe over the final 66 seconds to secure the win.
Harris led Lourdes with 23 points while
Little Anderson (Toledo, Ohio/Cardinal Stritch H.S.) added 19 more to go along with five assists.
Joey Holifield (Toledo, Ohio/Cardinal Stritch H.S.) tallied 15 points and Snow finished with 13.
Carter Nyp led Cornerstone (14-7, 8-5 WHAC) with 23 points and nine rebounds while Cory Ainsworth added 22 points on 7-of-8 shooting from the floor.
Lourdes (15-6, 9-4) returns to the road on Wednesday evening with a trip to Grand Rapids, Mich. to battle Aquinas. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. inside the Sturrus Sports and Fitness Center.
