Final Results
Lourdes improved to 4-1 in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference action on Friday evening with a 25-24 victory over Rochester (Mich.) inside the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center in a match determined by criteria.
The Gray Wolves and Warriors finished the dual tied at 24. After the two sides were even on the first criteria of bouts won, Lourdes earned the victory with more max point wins, 4-3.
"I am so proud of the way that the guys battled tonight," head coach
Dock Kelly III said afterwards. "Every match and point mattered and the guys found a way to come out victorious."
Lourdes started fast.
Tyler Hisey (St. Marys, Ohio/Memorial H.S.) pinned his opponent at the 2:29 mark of the opening period at 125 pounds and
Cole McKinley (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview H.S.) was awarded a forfeit victory at 133 pounds.
The Gray Wolves built an 18-0 lead after
Jimmy Balazy (Parma, Ohio/Padua Franciscan H.S.) scored a fall with just two seconds remaining on the clock in the opening period of his 141-pound match. The Warriors then broke through on the scoreboard with a decision at 149 and picked up a disqualification at 157. Lourdes also lost four team points for misconduct at the time. Rochester (7-4, 3-2 WHAC) then pulled within two, 14-12, after a sudden victory at 165 pounds.
Dominico Migliori (Curtis, Ohio/Clay H.S.) swung the momentum back Lourdes' way at 174 pounds with his team-leading 10
th fall of the season just 1:47 into his match. Rochester drew back within two points after an injury default at 184 pounds.
Carter Kroll (Ontario, Ohio/Ontario H.S.), ranked 14
th in the NAIA at 197 pounds then secured the win for Lourdes. A late takedown followed by a riding time point allowed him to score a 10-2 major decision over 11
th-ranked Kyle Scott. The team points proved vital as the Warriors scored a fall in the final match of the night to pull even on the scoreboard but could not overcome the criteria that the Gray Wolves had secured.
"Carter had a huge win over a ranked opponent, and that is a reflection of the hard work that he has been putting in all year long," Kelly added. "We will now take the weekend off to rest and recover and get ready for Indiana Tech."
Lourdes (7-6, 4-1) will close out the dual match portion of its schedule, along with the WHAC slate, next Friday evening as the Gray Wolves host fifth-ranked Indiana Tech. The opening bout is set for 7 p.m. with Senior Night activities taking place prior to the match inside the Ebeid Rec Center.
