Lourdes wrapped up its weekend trip to Grand Rapids, Mich. on Saturday afternoon, dropping a 25-13, 25-21, 25-15 match to Cornerstone inside of Mol Arena.
The Gray Wolves never led in the opening set. After falling behind 4-0, Lourdes battled back to pull even at seven, only to see the Golden Eagles close the set on an 18-6 run. The second stanza was tied at 13 when Cornerstone scored seven of the next eight points to build a 20-14 advantage. Lourdes fought back to within one, 21-20, but was unable to finish the comeback attempt. In the third, a 7-0 run by the hosts put Cornerstone in front 11-4 and the Golden Eagles never looked back on the way to finishing off the sweep.
Ella Lewis (Scotts, Mich./Portage Northern H.S.) led Lourdes with nine kills in the match as the Gray Wolves hit just .103 as a team on the afternoon. Defensively,
Mia Lopez (San Diego, Calif./Mount Carmel H.S.) picked up a team-high 16 digs.
Gabrielle VerBerkmoe led Cornerstone (11-12, 6-7 WHAC) with 10 kills and hit .714 while Emma Whitley picked up 14 digs.
Lourdes (2-16, 2-11) returns to the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center on Wednesday evening to begin a three-match homestand, entertaining Indiana Tech. The first serve is set for 7 p.m.
