Lourdes Secures WHAC Tournament Berth with Win over Cleary

Despite playing a player down for more than 70 minutes, Lourdes secured a spot in the upcoming Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference tournament with a 3-1 victory over Cleary on Wednesday evening at Wildcat Stadium.

"The red card was a very unfortunate situation but credit our group for not changing our approach after going a man down," head coach Matt Johnson said afterwards.  "It was a long time to be short, but we managed it well.  We're really happy to get the win under the circumstances."

After falling a man down in the 24th minute, Lourdes took the lead just over eight minutes later as Nate Schuele (Toledo, Ohio/Southview H.S.) netted his first collegiate goal following a corner kick off the foot of Federico Reali (Ceprano, Italy/Liceo Sulpicio).

The Gray Wolves carried the 1-0 lead into intermission after outshooting the Cougars 6-3 in the opening half and holding a 7-0 edge in corner opportunities.

Cleary (5-9-3, 2-6-2 WHAC) evened the match just 6:47 into the second half as Lesman Morazan sent a ball ahead to Adam Baldwin who broke away from the Gray Wolf defense for the goal.

Lourdes regained the lead with 14:58 to play in the contest.  Victor Espinoza (Asuncion, Paraguay/Cristo Rey) sent a free kick to the far post where Daniel Mirlach (Windach, Germany/Ignaz Kogler Gymnasium) was able to connect and tally his first career goal which proved to be the match-winner.

Just 2:23 later, Kofi Ohene-Larbi (Kumasi, Ghana/St. Francis de Sales H.S. [Ohio]) scored his first goal as a Gray Wolf, firing a shot from the right side that went through the hands of Cougar netminder Thomas Kanouna.

The Gray Wolves finished the match with a 16-6 shot advantage as Alex Brock (Sylvania, Ohio/Southview H.S.) made three saves between the posts.  Kanouna had six stops for Cleary.  Lourdes also finished the match with all 11 corner kick chances.

"Now we're looking forward to the game on Saturday and recognizing the seniors that have given so much to our program over the last few years," Johnson added.  "Hopefully we can continue to play with the same confidence as we move into the playoffs."

Lourdes (5-6-5, 5-3-2) will close out the regular season at home on Saturday afternoon as the Gray Wolves host Michigan-Dearborn for Senior Day.  Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. at Wildcat Stadium.
