Lourdes Rolls Past Wilberforce in Season Opener

Lourdes shot 65.2% from the floor on the way to a convincing 108-80 victory over Wilberforce in the season opener on Wednesday evening inside the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center.

Jackie Harris (Toledo, Ohio/St. Francis de Sales H.S.) poured in 39 points, making 14-of-19 from the floor including 7-of-10 from three-point range, while Joey Holifield (Toledo, Ohio/Cardinal Stritch H.S.) added 24 more while handing out four assists.  Shaunn Monroe (Charleston, W. Va./Fairborn [Ohio] H.S.) made his Gray Wolf debut, tallying 12 points.

"I thought we played well overall," head coach Dennis Hopson said afterwards.  "I like that our kids are starting to understand our offense.  The zone was excellent on defense.  We got a little cavalier at times with the ball and committed 19 turnovers which is not good, and we should have gotten to the free throw line a bit more."

Lourdes needed less than six minutes to build a double-digit advantage, 19-8, only to see the Bulldogs cut the lead to three, 23-20, with 10:53 to play before halftime.  The Gray Wolves then scored the game's next 13 points and would not see its lead fall back to single digits the rest of the way.

The Gray Wolves led 57-41 at half as Harris scored 23 points in the opening 20 minutes.  A 15-2 run to open the second half pushed the lead to 29 and Lourdes led by as many as 38 in the second half.

Cali Davis and Kaleb Mitchell led Wilberforce (2-1) with 17 points each as the Bulldogs shot 42.9% from the floor but were just 5-of-19 (26.3%) from long range.

Lourdes finished with a 36-29 edge on the glass with Jakiel Wells (Toledo, Ohio/St. Francis de Sales H.S.) pulling down a game-high nine rebounds off the bench.

The Gray Wolves forced 23 Bulldog turnovers, converting them into 32 points.  The Gray Wolves also held a 58-18 advantage scoring in the paint.

Lourdes (1-0) remains home on Saturday afternoon as the Gray Wolves host Olivet for Homecoming weekend.  Tip-off is set for 3 p.m. inside the Ebeid Rec Center.
