Lourdes improved to a program best 4-0 start on Wednesday evening as the Gray Wolves opened Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play with an 84-53 victory over Siena Heights inside the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center.
"Our defense was good tonight and the ability to force 19 turnovers was our biggest key tonight," head coach
Dennis Hopson said afterwards. "We made them uncomfortable and wore them down. Our guys' legs seemed to be a lot fresher tonight as well."
Siena Heights held a 16-15 lead 12 minutes into the game and the Saints were within two, 22-20, at the 5:47 mark when Lourdes closed the first half with a 16-0 run to take control of the game. The Gray Wolves held the Saints to just 33.3% shooting over the opening 20 minutes while forcing 11 first half turnovers.
Lourdes opened the second half with the first four points and outscored Siena Heights 19-4 over the first seven minutes while pushing the lead to 32, 57-25, and never looked back. The Gray Wolves led by as many as 38 and led by at least 30 for the final 13 minutes of the contest.
Jackie Harris (Toledo, Ohio/St. Francis de Sales H.S.) led all scorers with 25 points for the 24
th-ranked Gray Wolves while
Shaunn Monroe (Charleston, W. Va./Fairborn [Ohio] H.S.) added 18 more on 8-of-13 shooting.
Stephen Coleman Jr. (Toledo, Ohio/Hillcrest Prep H.S.) chipped in 14 points and
Joey Holifield (Toledo, Ohio/Cardinal Stritch H.S.) tallied 13 more as Lourdes had four players score in double figures.
Jakiel Wells (Toledo, Ohio/St. Francis de Sales H.S.) handed out seven assists and registered three steals.
Delano Williams led Siena Heights (1-1, 0-1 WHAC) with 14 points.
Lourdes (4-0, 1-0) takes to the road for the first time during the regular season on Saturday afternoon as the Gray Wolves travel to Dearborn, Mich. to face Michigan-Dearborn. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m. inside UMD Fieldhouse.
