Lourdes took to the road on Wednesday evening and dropped its first dual match of the 2023-2024 season, falling 24-18 to Rochester (Mich.) inside of Garth Pleasant Arena in Rochester Hills, Mich.
"This was a very disappointing loss tonight," head coach
Dock Kelly III said afterwards. "Our lack of quality depth really hurt us at several weights. We must come ready to compete at a higher level if we are going to contend for a conference title. Giving up so many bonus points is not acceptable, and we will adjust to correct that issue immediately."
Lourdes battled from behind from the beginning. After forfeiting at 125 pounds,
Nick Rodriguez (Toledo, Ohio/Clay H.S.) improved to 7-0 on the season with a 7-3 decision at 133 pounds. Rochester then tallied a fall at 141 pounds and won by decision at 149 to build a 15-3 advantage in the match.
Drew Torres (Phoenix, Ariz./Tempe Union H.S.) earned an 11-5 decision at 157 for his team-leading eighth victory of the year while
Derick Coleman (Clyde, Ohio/Clyde H.S.) scored a 21-5 technical fall at the end of the second period.
Rochester clinched the match with a pin at 174 followed by a whin in sudden victory at 184.
Will Speight (Bedford, Ohio/Bedford H.S.), wrestling up a weight class, tallied a 14-7 decision at 197 before
Tyler Cobb (Toledo, Ohio/Clay H.S.) closed the night with a 12-1 major decision at 285 for the Gray Wolves.
"
Will Speight and Ty Cobb both had quality wins tonight along with
Nick Rodriguez,
Derick Coleman, and Andrew Torres," Kelly added. "We look forward to improving at practice tomorrow and preparing to compete this weekend."
Lourdes (1-1, 1-1 WHAC) will head to the Baldwin Wallace Invitational on Saturday. The action begins at 10 a.m. inside Lou Higgins Center Fieldhouse in Berea, Ohio.
