Lourdes Tallies Four Placers at Baldwin Wallace Invitational

Final Results

Lourdes had four wrestlers place in the top-five of their respective weight classes on Saturday as the Gray Wolves finished in seventh place as a team at the Baldwin Wallace Invitational held inside Lou Higgins Center Fieldhouse in Berea, Ohio on Saturday.

The Gray Wolves, with just seven wrestlers competing, tallied 62 points, finishing just nine points behind sixth place Pitt-Bradford in the field of 13 schools.  Baldwin Wallace won the tournament with 212.5 points while Case Western Reserve finished runner-up with 136.5 points.

"The was a solid day of wrestling for us," head coach Dock Kelly III said afterwards.  "We are a little banged up, however, Ty Cobb led the way for us.  He is working hard and it is paying off.  This is a very solid invitational tournament so any success shouldn't be downplayed."

Tyler Cobb (Toledo, Ohio/Clay H.S.) led the way for the Gray Wolves, finishing runner-up in the 285-pound weight class.  He opened with a 7-1 decision before registering a quarterfinal pin at the 2:08 mark of the opening period.  In the semifinals, Cobb scored a 6-3 decision before being pinned in the championship match midway through the second period.

Niko Christo (Galion, Ohio/Northmor H.S.) placed third at 174 pounds.  He came out strong, scoring a pair of pins along with a 20-5 tech fall to reach the semifinals.  After dropping his semifinal bout, he earned another decision over teammate Evan Perry (Delta, Ohio/Delta H.S.) on his way to a third place finish.  Perry dropped his first match of the day before winning three straight, one via 16-1 tech fall, another by a 9-8 decision, and a third with a pin with 52 seconds left in the match to face Christo.  He then went on to post a 9-4 decision in the fifth place match.

Cole McKinley (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview H.S.) finished fourth at 141 pounds.  After dropping his first match, he battled back through the consolation draw, scoring three pins and a 19-3 tech fall before losing via decision in the third place match.  Dru Wilson (Warren, Mich./Wood-Tower H.S.) also won two matches in the consolation bracket at 141, scoring a fall and a tech fall.

Marcus Cortez (Galion, Ohio/Northmor H.S.) picked up the other win on the day for Lourdes, pinning his first round opponent at 149 pounds.

"I'm very pleased with how we are progressing as a team," Kelly added.  We have two huge tournaments coming up after the Thanksgiving break and I'm looking forward to seeing how we compete against our regional opponents."

Lourdes will return to the mat on Dec. 2, taking part in the Indiana Little State tournament hosted by Indiana Tech.  Action begins at 10 a.m. inside the Doug Edgar Indoor Track Facility in Fort Wayne, Ind.
