Rodriguez Wins at 125 at Pepsi Patriot Open

Final Results

Led by Nick Rodriguez's (Toledo, Ohio/Clay H.S.) title at 125 pounds and Tyler Cobb's (Toledo, Ohio/Clay H.S.) runner-up finish at 285 pounds, Lourdes opened the season on Saturday at the Pepsi Patriot Open.

"This was a fantastic start to the season for us," head coach Dock Kelly III said afterwards.  "Our guys have been working hard and it's great to see it pay off today.  Having five place winners is a testament to the potential of this team.  Nick Rodriguez is exactly who we thought he is!  He wrestled very well and got stronger as the day went on.  Ty Cobb had a very impressive debut also.  He's going to be a huge factor for us as we move forwards ad we are excited about his potential."

The event was divided into two brackets per weight class, one for freshmen and sophomores and the other an open division.

Rodriguez, competing in the freshman/sophomore bracket, tallied five wins on his way to the title, four of which came via technical falls.  His 83 total points was the third highest total at the event.

Cobb also competed in the freshman/sophomore bracket and recorded a pair of falls and a decision win before dropping a 9-5 decision in the title match.

Drew Torres (Phoenix, Ariz./Tempe Union H.S.) placed third in the 157 open division.  He won five matches via decisions, including one in sudden victory, while adding a major decision to his total.

Niko Christo (Galion, Ohio/Nothmor H.S.) finished fourth in the freshman/sophomore 174 weight class.  He tallied three pins and a tech fall on the day.  Evan Perry (Delta, Ohio/Delta H.S.) placed sixth in the same bracket.  After dropping his first match, he recorded four straight pins.

Derick Coleman (Clyde, Ohio/Clyde H.S.) had three triumphs in the open 165 division.  Cole McKinley (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview H.S.) picked up two wins on the day in the freshman/sophomore 141 while Dru Wilson (Warren, Mich./Wood-Tower H.S.) also added two victories on the mat in the open 141.

In all, 11 of the 12 grapplers that took to the mat recorded at least one win to open the season.

Lourdes will begin the dual match portion of its schedule on Thursday evening as the Gray Wolves host Siena Heights in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference opener.  Action begins at 7 p.m. inside the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center.
