Lourdes took the mat for the final time in the 2023 calendar year on Sunday, splitting a pair of matches at the Lindsey Wilson Duals in Columbia, Ky.
The Gray Wolves opened dropping at 32-17 decision to ninth-ranked Cumberlands (Ky.) Before defeating Rio Grande 29-25. Lourdes then defeated Bluefield 34-18 before falling to seventh-ranked Reinhardt 25-20 to close the day.
"This was a tough team dual event to end the semester," head coach
Dock Kelly III said afterwards. "The quality of competition will benefit us tremendously moving forward. Coach Piszker had our guys motivated and ready to compete today and it showed, especially in our upper weights."
In the opener, Cumberlands won the first seven bouts before Lourdes won the final three contests.
Will Speight (Bedford, Ohio/Bedford H.S.) posted a 21-5 tech fall at 184 pounds before
Carter Kroll (Ontario, Ohio/Ontario H.S.) scored a pin at the 2:16 mark in the opening period at 197 pounds.
Tyler Cobb (Oregon, Ohio/Clay H.S.) capped the match with a pin of his own at 285 at the 1:54 mark.
Lourdes carried the momentum into the Rio Grande match.
Cole McKinley (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview H.S.) and
Dru Wilson (Warren, Mich./Wood-Tower H.S.) both posted pins at 133 and 141 pounds respectively while
Derick Coleman (Clyde, Ohio/Clyde H.S.) picked up an 18-0 tech fall at 165 pounds. Kroll earned his second pin of the day just 36 seconds into his match while Speight was a winner via forfeit.
McKinley picked up another first period fall against Bluefield while Wilson won 18-2 with a tech fall.
Drew Torres (Phoenix, Ariz./Tempe Union H.S.) notched a tech fall of his own, 22-6, at 157 pounds. Coleman earned a win via forfeit while Speight and Cobb closed the match with back-to-back pins.
McKinley tallied his third pin of the day against Reinhardt with just 15 seconds left in the opening period while Coleman won his match in a 7-2 decision. Speight recorded an 18-5 major decision and Kroll had one of his own by a 10-2 score. Cobb closed the day with a 7-3 decision.
"We will take a couple weeks off and then return in early January for the home stretch of the season," Kelly concluded.
Lourdes (3-3) will take a month off before returning to the match on Jan. 10 as the Gray Wolves host Cornerstone in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference action. The opening bout is set for 7 p.m. inside the Franciscan Center Gymnasium.
