Lourdes Notches Second Straight Sweep of St. Mary-of-the-Woods

For the second straight day 10th-ranked Lourdes swept St. Mary-of-the-Woods on Saturday, as the Gray Wolves defeated the Pomeroys 25-18, 25-21, 25-23 inside the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center.

"We did a fine job finishing the weekend with a win," head coach Greg Reitz said afterwards.  "We need to get back into the gym though and focus on a tough non-conference opponent midweek."

Paul Rolland (Guethary, France/Justin Siena [Calif.] H.S.) put down 15 kills and hit .423 while also recording a pair of service aces.  He also shared the team lead with Max Baumann (Tulsa, Okla./Bishop Kelly H.S.) with six digs each.

George Tsogtbaatar (Wheeling, Ill./Wheeling H.S.) handed out 26 assists while leading the Gray Wolf offense that hit .267 for the afternoon.

Lourdes raced out to a 9-3 lead in the opening set and never trailed in taking the early lead in the match.  Set two had 13 ties and seven lead changes before the Gray Wolves took the lead for good with a 3-0 spurt behind a pair of service aces from Andrew Sviben (Bressler, Pa./Central Dauphin East H.S.).

The Gray Wolves had to rally in the third.  Trailing 19-14, Lourdes went on a 9-1 run to pull in front.  The Pomeroys evened the set at 23 but Lourdes took advantage of a service error and a block by Sviben and Mitch Hoffman (Grand Rapids, Mich./West Michigan Aviation Academy) to close out the match.

Andrej Lindner and Mark Zmojdzin led St. Mary-of-the-Woods (2-16, 0-12 WHAC) with eight kills each.

Lourdes (13-4, 10-1), winners of seven straight, step out of WHAC play on Tuesday evening, traveling to Chicago, Ill. to face 12th-ranked Saint Xavier.  First serve is set for 8 p.m. EST inside Shannon Center.
