Lourdes cruised to a 12-1 win in game one of Saturday's doubleheader against Cornerstone but the Golden Eagles rallied in game two to defeat the Gray Wolves 8-7 at Mercy Field.
"We executed our team approach perfectly in the first game," head coach
Josh Bradford said afterwards. "Michael (Strzelewicz) got the big hit in the first inning and we just kept going from there. Wyatt (Smith) gave us six strong innings and it was great to see Jake (Boyd) back out there to finish it. In game two we jumped out early but were just not able to tack on more runs in the early innings. Joey (Oehlers) pitched well against a good Cornerstone lineup. They got a couple of big hits to grab the momentum and we came up a little short in the end."
The first five batters of game one all reached for the Gray Wolves with
Steve Haugh (Waterville, Ohio/Anthony Wayne H.S.) delivering a RBI single before
Michael Strzelewicz (Temperance, Mich./Saint Mary's Catholic Central H.S.) hit a grand slam to put Lourdes in front 5-0.
After Cornerstone scored a run in the second, Lourdes responded with a tally of its own in the fourth on a
Harrison Jackson (Millbury, Ohio/Lake H.S.) homer. The Gray Wolves then sent 10 batters to the plate in the fifth inning, scoring six times, to put the game out of reach.
Ryan Jagodzinski (Perrysburg, Ohio/Rossford H.S.) and
Joel Suraganan (Pickerington, Ont./Dunbarton H.S.) each had three hits as the Gray Wolves banged out 14 total in the opener.
Wyatt Smith (Sycamore, Ohio/Wynford H.S.) scattered just three hits while allowing the one earned run to pick up the win (4-1), striking out three in six innings of work while
Jake Boyd (West Jefferson, Ohio/West Jefferson H.S.) tossed a perfect inning in relief.
Lourdes again plated five first inning runs in game two. A two-run double by Strzelewicz and a two-RBI single by
Caleb Dugan (Lima, Ohio/Lima Senior H.S.) were the big hits in the inning as the first six batters of the game reached base safely.
Cornerstone (16-23, 9-12 WHAC) scored a run in the fourth before the game was delayed 48 minutes due to lightning in the area in the top of the fifth inning. The Golden Eagles came out of the delay scoring three times in both the sixth and seventh innings to take the lead.
Lourdes pulled within one scoring a run on a ground out in the seventh before Jagodzinski tied the game with a RBI single in the eighth. The Golden Eagles would plate the eventual winning run with a two-out single in the ninth.
Jagodzinski had another two-hit game as did Dugan, accounting for half of the Gray Wolves' eight hits in game two.
Joey Oehlers (Lambertville, Mich./Bedford H.S.) started and tossed six innings, allowing four runs and six hits while striking out five before leaving with a no decision.
Lourdes (16-18, 12-9) has postponed its scheduled doubleheader on Sunday at Aquinas, with the two teams making up the twinbill on Wednesday (April 19) at 2 p.m. in Grand Rapids, Mich. The Gray Wolves will travel to Adrian, Mich. on Tuesday afternoon for the final game of the season series against Siena Heights. The first pitch is set for 4 p.m. at the SHU Baseball Diamond.
