Lourdes won the opener of Wednesday's doubleheader 7-4 over Aquinas at Farmers Insurance Complex in Grand Rapids, Mich. before the Saints took the nightcap 10-0.
Â
In the opener, Lourdes drew five walks over the first two innings but were unable to produce a run. The Gray Wolves broke through in the third as
Josh Hare (Simcoe, Ont./Holy Trinity H.S.) was hit by a pitch with one out and moved to second on a balk.Â
Steve Haugh (Waterville, Ohio/Anthony Wayne H.S.) followed with a ground-rule double to produce the game's first run.
Â
Aquinas tied the game in the bottom of the third but the Gray Wolves immediately responded. Back-to-back doubles by
Nick DiGennaro (Oakville, Ont./St. Ignatius of Loyola H.S.) and
Harrison Jackson (Millbury, Ohio/Lake H.S.) put Lourdes back in front. Jackson then stole third and scored when the throw bounced away, increasing the lead to 3-1.
Â
The Saints battled back to tie the game again, plating a run in the fourth and another in the sixth before the Gray Wolves batted around in the seventh. With two outs, Lourdes loaded the bases before
Michael Strzelewicz (Temperance, Mich./Saint Mary's Catholic Central H.S.) doubled to left-center, clearing the bases. He scored two batters later on a throwing error, pushing the lead to four. Aquinas would plate one in the bottom of the seventh
Â
Bryn Biemiller (Newmarket, Ont./Bill Crothers H.S.) worked six innings on the mound to get the win (1-0), yielding just one earned run and eight hits while striking out four.
Â
In game two, Aquinas took advantage of a pair of walks and a Lourdes error in the opening inning to score three times. The Saints added another unearned tally in the second. A five-run fifth inning increased the lead to nine for Aquinas.
Â
Evan Douglass carried a no-hitter into the seventh for Aquinas (22-19, 12-10 WHAC) when Strzelewicz broke up the bid with a wind-blown double into left. That would be the lone hit for the Gray Wolves in the nightcap.
Â
Lourdes (17-20, 13-11) begins a 10-game season-ending homestand on Saturday afternoon. The Gray Wolves will host Cleary for a noon doubleheader at Mercy Field to open a four-game weekend series.
