Lourdes began its season-ending 10-game homestand on Saturday afternoon, splitting a doubleheader with Cleary at Mercy Field. The Gray Wolves won the opener 10-3 before the Cougars pulled out the nightcap 2-1.
Cleary took the early lead in the opener with a pair of runs in the second inning before Lourdes took over.
Harrison Jackson (Millbury, Ohio/Lake H.S.) singled home
Caleb Dugan (Lima, Ohio/Lima Senior H.S.) in the bottom of the frame for the first of three hits and four runs batted in.
After the Cougars plated a run in the top of the third,
Steve Haugh's (Waterville, Ohio/Anthony Wayne H.S.) RBI single in the third pulled Lourdes within one before
Michael Strzelewicz (Temperance, Mich./Saint Mary's Catholic Central H.S.) hit a three-run home run to put the Gray Wolves in front for good. Two batters later Jackson added a solo shot to increase the lead to 6-3.
Jackson's second homer of the game, a two-run blast in the fifth, increased the lead to five before
Joel Suraganan (Pickerington, Ont./Dunbarton H.S.) tripled home a run in the sixth, scoring himself on the play courtesy of a Cleary error.
Wyatt Smith (Sycamore, Ohio/Wynford H.S.) went the distance on the mound, striking out eight while allowing just two earned runs and five hits to earn the win (5-1).
The Lourdes offense pounded out 12 hits in the opener, including three each by Suraganan and Jackson.
In game two, Cleary plated a run in the top of the first on a sacrifice fly and maintained the advantage until the fifth. Suraganan's two-out single tied the game, plating
Ryan Jagodzinski (Perrysburg, Ohio/Rossford H.S.), who tripled one batter earlier.
The game stayed tied until the ninth when the Cougars scored what proved to be the game-winning run. A hit batter, a sacrifice bunt, an error, and a sacrifice fly plated the run without a hit.
Brandon Holland (Riga, Mich./Blissfield H.S.) started and worked six innings on the hill for the Gray Wolves, allowing just one run on seven hits while striking out five. The Lourdes offense managed just six hits against Cleary's pitching.
Lourdes (18-21, 14-12 WHAC) and Cleary (26-17, 15-10) will close out their four-game weekend series on Sunday with another doubleheader. First pitch in game one is set for 1 p.m. at Mercy Field.
