Lourdes Baseball Earns Split at Lawrence Tech

Hunter Mix (Swanton, Ohio/Swanton H.S.) hit a two-run home run in the top of the ninth of game one, helping Lourdes to an 8-6 win in the opener before Lawrence Tech answered with a 12-2 victory in game two on Friday at Jimmy John's Field in Utica, Mich.

Lourdes took the lead in the second inning of game one as Joel Suraganan (Pickerington, Ont./Dunbarton H.S.) doubled home a pair of runs before Josh Hare (Simcoe, Ont./Holy Trinty H.S.) followed with a RBI single.

The Blue Devils responded with three runs in the third to tie the game before Suraganan's second RBI double of the game put Lourdes in front 4-3 in the fourth.  The Gray Wolves increased their lead to three in the fifth with a wild pitch and a RBI ground out, only to see Lawrence Tech tie the game in the seventh with three runs, including a two-run home run by Nick Olsen, to force extra innings.

Michael Strzelewicz (Temperance, Mich./Saint Mary's Catholic Central H.S.) registered a one-out single in the ninth before Mix hit his third round-tripper of the season with what proved to be the winning runs.

"It was nice to come away with a good conference win on the road," head coach Josh Bradford said.  "I'm proud of the way we bounced back after they tied it in the bottom of the seventh.  Hunter came up with the huge hit in the ninth to get us the win."

Lawrence Tech (12-17, 5-6 WHAC) scored quick in game two, plating three runs in the first and six more in the second, including a grand slam by Sam DeKuiper.  The Blue Devils tacked on three more in the third to take a 12-0 lead.

The Gray Wolves finally broke through in the seventh as Caleb Dugan (Lima, Ohio/Lima Senior H.S.) singled home a run, one of two hits in the game for Lourdes.  Mix added a sacrifice fly for the Gray Wolves' other run.

Lourdes (13-14, 9-7) will return home to Mercy Field on Saturday afternoon as the Gray Wolves host the Univeristy of Michigan-Dearborn.  First pitch in game one of the doubleheader is set for 1 p.m.
