Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play opened on Saturday afternoon and with it came Lourdes' first victory of the season as the Gray Wolves defeated Cornerstone 1-0 at the Soccer Stadium in Grand Rapids, Mich.
"It's a great feeling to finally get a win," head coach
Matt Johnson said afterwards. "Winning on the road in the WHAC is never easy, and Cornerstone is very well coached and physically strong. We gained some control of the game in the second half and started to create some decent chances."
The two sides played a scoreless opening half, with Cornerstone outshooting the Gray Wolves 3-1 prior to intermission. The Gray Wolves had more offensive pressure over the final 45 minutes though, outshooting the Golden Eagles 8-3 in the second half to finish with a 9-6 advantage.
Lourdes broke the scoreless deadlock with 16:34 to play in the match.
Nate Schuele (Toledo, Ohio/Southview H.S.) played a ball into the box from the left side where
Martin Coronel (Asuncion, Paraguay/San Jose H.S.) collected, dribbled to the corner of the six, and fired far post for the lone goal of the match. The tally was Coronel's first of the season and second match-winner of his career while Schuele garnered his first collegiate point.
"It was nice to see one go in the net and hopefully it helps Martin's confidence," Johnson added. "He's such an important player for our attack and things haven't quite been clicking for him so far."
Alex Brock (Sylvania, Ohio/Southview H.S.) made two saves in goal for Lourdes to register his second clean sheet of the season and fourth career clean sheet. Roberto Gutierrez made three saves for Cornerstone (2-4-2, 0-1 WHAC).
"We have a big challenge in front of us with UNOH coming on Wednesday, so we have to put this game behind us and prepare for a difficult opponent," Johnson concluded.
Lourdes (1-3-3, 1-0) returns home on Wednesday afternoon as the Gray Wolves entertain the University of Northwestern Ohio. Kickoff is slated for 2 p.m. at Wildcat Stadium.
