For the first time in program history Lourdes picked up a hard-earned point against the University of Northwestern Ohio on Wednesday afternoon as the Gray Wolves and Racers battled to a 1-1 draw at Wildcat Stadium.
"UNOH is a much better team than their record reflects," head coach
Matt Johnson said afterwards. "It was a really high tempo game and very physical. It was pretty unfortunate that we got the red card when we did. Prior to that I thought we were starting to create some good chances. It's really difficult going down a player against a team of their quality but give credit to our guys. We kept fighting and got a point out of the match."
Northwestern Ohio (1-5-3, 0-0-2 WHAC) found the scoreboard first with just under 10 minutes to play before halftime. The Racers had a two-on-one in the offensive end when Moritz Guettel found Diego Cerezo, who fired a shot that just ricocheted off the cross bar across the goal line.
The Gray Wolves evened the match just 37 seconds later. Following a handball in the box by the Racers,
Martin Coronel (Asuncion, Paraguay/San Jose H.S.) stepped up and converted the penalty kick for his second goal of the season.
The match remained deadlocked into intermission with Northwestern Ohio holding an 8-3 advantage. The Racers outshot Lourdes for the match 18-10 and played with a man advantage for the final 9:22 following a Gray Wolf red card.
Alex Brock (Sylvania, Ohio/Southview H.S.) made three saves, including a pair of diving stops, to keep the match deadlocked for the Gray Wolves while Georgios Theodoulide had three saves for Northwestern Ohio.
Lourdes (1-3-4, 1-0-1) remains home on Saturday afternoon as the Gray Wolves entertain Lawrence Tech. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. at Wildcat Stadium.
