Lawrence Tech scored the lone goal of the match with less than five minutes to play on Saturday as the Blue Devils defeated Lourdes 1-0 at Wildcat Stadium.
"Lawrence Tech is a very well-coached team and has shown the ability to grab goals in the second half all year and they did it to us tonight," head coach
Matt Johnson said afterwards. "We did a good job of creating turnovers in really good spots with our press and had some good moments creating chances in the final third but are still struggling with our confidence and execution in front of the goal. We still feel there are goals in us, we just need to stay positive and keep working on getting into the right spots and playing at the right tempo and they will come."
The two sides battled to a scoreless opening half with Lourdes outshooting the Blue Devils 5-3. Lawrence Tech then outshot the Gray Wolves 9-4 over the final 45 minutes to finish the night with a 12-9 advantage.
Alex Brock (Sylvania, Ohio/Southview H.S.) kept the Gray Wolves in the match, making five saves on the night. None were bigger than saving a penalty kick with a diving stop to his right with 13:04 to play to keep the match scoreless.
Lawrence Tech (8-1-1, 2-0-1 WHAC) finally broke through with 4:30 to play as Reece Still sent a cross into the box where Skander Larfaoui got his head on the ball and found the back of the net for the deciding tally.
"We have a big challenge in front of us going to Madonna on Wednesday and hopefully we can finish a few in that one," Johnson concluded.
Lourdes (1-4-4, 1-1-1) heads to Livonia, Mich. to battle Madonna on Wednesday afternoon with kickoff slated for 3 p.m. at the Madonna Soccer & Lacrosse Field.
