Jackie Harris (Toledo, Ohio/St. Francis de Sales H.S.) surpassed the 1,000-point plateau for his Lourdes career on Wednesday evening on his way to a game-high 20 points as the 14
th-ranked Gray Wolves defeated Cleary 77-54 inside the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center.
Harris reached the mark with a free throw with 3:13 to play in the second half and followed that up with two more triples in the closing minutes to give him 1,006 points over his three seasons at Lourdes.
"Congrats to Jackie on his accomplishment," head coach
Dennis Hopson said afterwards. "It's not something a lot of people have a chance to do. Jackie works hard and it's well-deserved."
The Gray Wolves led from start to finish, jumping out to a quick 11-3 lead. Cleary would battle back to within three on three different occasions in the opening half before Lourdes pulled away over the final 10 minutes of the stanza, building a 40-27 lead at halftime.
The Cougars scored the first five points of the second half to pull within eight, but that would be the final time they would be within single digits the rest of the way. A 9-0 run midway through the half pushed the advantage to 19 and Lourdes would lead by as many as 25 down the stretch.
"This was a good win," Hopson added. "We have to play harder as a group though. We can't worry about who we are playing and just need to play Lourdes basketball. I love the energy and toughness that Cleary plays with."
Joey Holifield (Toledo, Ohio/Cardinal Stritch H.S.),
Stephen Coleman Jr. (Toledo, Ohio/Hillcrest Prep H.S.), and
Shaunn Monroe (Charleston, W. Va./Fairborn [Ohio] H.S.) each added 12 points. Holifield was 12-for-12 from the free throw line while Monroe finished in double figures for the 13
th straight game to start the season.
Lourdes finished with a 37-23 edge on the glass, including a 15-2 advantage in offensive rebounding, leading to 23 second chance points. The Gray Wolves also forced 17 turnovers leading to 23 points.
Bennie Crenshaw Jr. led Cleary (1-13, 1-8) with 12 points.
Lourdes (12-1, 8-1) heads to Garth Pleasant Arena on Saturday afternoon to battle Rochester (Mich.). Tip-off is set for 3 p.m. in Rochester Hills, Mich.
