Returning to the mat for the first time in more than a month, Lourdes notched a 32-14 victory over Cornerstone inside the Franciscan Center Gymnasium on Wednesday night.
"This was a nice team win tonight," head coach
Dock Kelly III said afterwards. "It's always a challenge for us when competing in the first match after the semester break but our guys responded well. It was also great to see our hard work translate into quality wins on the mat."
Nick Rodriguez (Toledo, Ohio/Clay H.S.), ranked fifth in the latest NAIA poll, opened the match with a 9-7 decision at 125 pounds to give the Gray Wolves the early lead. After Cornerstone (3-5, 1-1 WHAC) posted a win at 133,
Dru Wilson (Warren, Mich./Wood-Tower H.S.) scored a 15-8 decision of his own at 141 pounds.
The Golden Eagles picked up a win via forfeit at 149 before the Gray Wolves'
Drew Torres (Phoenix, Ariz./Tempe Union H.S.) downed Cornerstone's Thade Radosa, who was ranked 19
th in the nation, with a 7-6 decision.
"He looked great defeating his nationally ranked opponent," Kelly said of Torres' win.
After Cornerstone retook the lead 14-9 with a tech fall at 165, it was all Lourdes after that, winning the final four bouts in dominating fashion.
Dominico Migliori (Curtis, Ohio/Clay H.S.), competing for the first time this season, pinned his opponent just 1:57 into his 174-pound match while
Will Speight (Bedford, Ohio/Bedford H.S.), ranked second nationally at 184 pounds, followed with a 27-11 tech fall.
Carter Kroll (Ontario, Ohio/Ontario H.S.), ranked 19
th at 197 pounds, picked up a fall with 11 seconds left in the opening period while
Tyler Cobb (Toledo, Ohio/Clay H.S.) followed at 285 pounds with a pin of his own at the 2:30 mark.
"We are in the final stretch of the season and I'm excited to watch it all come together for us," Kelly concluded. "We have a quick turnaround ahead of us, but I have complete confidence that Coach Piszker will have our guys ready to compete against Marian on Sunday."
Lourdes (4-3, 2-1) will return to the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center on Sunday for its final home match of the season as the Gray Wolves battle Marian. The opening bout is set for 1:30 p.m. with Senior Day activities taking place prior to the match.
