Lourdes Rallies for Senior Day Victory over Marian

Final Results

Trailing by 14 points with three bouts remaining, Lourdes rallied to defeat Marian 27-24 to celebrate Senior Day on Sunday afternoon inside the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center.

The result marks the first dual match victory over the Knights in seven tries for the Gray Wolves and Lourdes won their fourth dual in their last five matches overall this season.

"This was an incredible team win," head coach Dock Kelly III said afterwards.  "What an awesome way to end our home dual meet season by defeating a team for the first time ever on senior day.  I am so proud of this team and the way that they competed."

Nick Rodriguez (Toledo, Ohio/Clay H.S.), ranked sixth in the latest NAIA poll, started the Gray Wolves strong at 125 pounds with a 22-6 tech fall, closing out his match as the horn sounded at the end of the second period.  He had three first period takedowns and added three more in the second to remain undefeated on the year, improving to 9-0 overall.

The Knights looked as if they were going to take control of the match, winning the next three bouts with a decision and a pair of falls to build a 15-5 advantage.  Drew Torres (Phoenix, Ariz./Tempe Union H.S.) stopped the momentum with a tech fall of his own, 25-10, at 157 pounds.  He had an 8-5 edge after three minutes and extended the lead to 19-8 after two periods before back-to-back takedowns closed out his win.

Marian (3-6, 0-1 WHAC) was credited with a forfeit victory at 165 pounds and added a decision at 174 to increase the team's lead to 24-10 before the Gray Wolves came storming back.

Second-ranked Will Speight (Bedford, Ohio/Bedford H.S.) used two four-point near falls on his way to a quick 17-2 tech fall, ending his match with 28 seconds left in the opening period to start the comeback.  Speight is now 13-0 on the year with six wins via tech falls.

At 197 pounds, 19th-ranked Carter Kroll (Ontario, Ohio/Ontario H.S.) needed just 1:36 to end his match.  He took down his opponent and carried that momentum into a pin, his eighth fall of the season, to pull the Gray Wolves within three on the team scoreboard heading into the final bout.

Tyler Cobb (Toledo, Ohio/Clay H.S.) clinched the comeback for the Gray Wolves at 285 pounds.  After losing in a 6-3 decision to Marian's Excell Brooks in early December at Indiana Little State, he avenged the defeat with a pin at the 1:25 mark in the opening period to give Lourdes the victory.  For Cobb it was his ninth fall of the year.

"We will enjoy this win," Kelly concluded.  "However, it's then going to be time to get prepared for the most grueling tournament of the season at Missouri Valley."

Lourdes (5-3, 3-1) will now head to Marshall, Mo. next weekend for their final tournament of the regular season, taking part in the Missouri Valley Invitational.  Action in the two-day event begins at 1 p.m. EST on Friday inside of Burns Athletics Complex.
