Lourdes had its longest winning streak in program history snapped at 10 consecutive games on Wednesday evening as the Gray Wolves fell in overtime 71-68 at home inside the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center against Lawrence Tech for the Gray Wolves' first loss of the season.
"Give Lawrence Tech all the credit in the world," head coach
Dennis Hopson said afterwards. "They came in and played a lot harder than we did. We didn't execute offensively, and we didn't defend."
Shaunn Monroe (Charleston, W. Va./Fairborn [Ohio] H.S.) scored a career-high 28 points to lead all scorers for the Gray Wolves and has now tallied double figures in all 11 games this season.
Joey Holifield (Toledo, Ohio/Cardinal Stritch H.S.) added 21 points as the only two Lourdes players to finish in double figures in the scoring column.
Jackie Harris (Toledo, Ohio/St. Francis de Sales H.S.) pulled down a game-high 16 rebounds.
Lourdes built an eight-point lead, 25-17, with 5:38 to play in the first half following a Harris triple and still led by six at the two-minute mark of the opening stanza when Lawrence Tech closed the frame scoring the final seven points to take a 30-29 lead into the locker room.
Lawrence Tech extended its advantage out of the locker room, scoring the first seven points to push the run to 14-0, holding the Gray Wolves without a field goal for nearly 6:30 spanning the two halves. The Blue Devils would extend their lead to 11, 46-35, with 12:27 to play in the game.
The Gray Wolves fought back, going on a 14-2 run over the next four minutes to retake the lead on a lay-in by Holifield, only to see Lawrence Tech respond with the next five points. Nine consecutive points by Lourdes, capped by a jumper from Holifield, pushed the lead back to five with 4:42 remaining.
That would be Lourdes final field goal of regulation though as Blue Devils closed to within two with just under four minutes left. Neither team would score for the next three minutes until Holifield connected on a pair of free throws with 47 seconds left.
After a layup by Lawrence Tech pulled the visitors back within two with 30 ticks remaining,
Nic Borojevich (Swanton, Ohio/Swanton H.S.) split a pair of free throws nine seconds later giving Lourdes a three-point lead. Cameron McEvans tied the game with a triple with 10.7 to go and Lourdes was unable to get off a shot down the stretch as the game went into overtime.
After a Monroe basket to start the extra session, Lawrence Tech scored seven of the next eight points to take the lead for good. Trailing by five, Lourdes fought back to within two with 30.6 seconds to play on a basket by
Ethan Damerum (Cressage, England/Chornwood Riders H.S.). After the Blue Devils split two free throws with 21.8 seconds left, Lourdes had two attempts in the closing seconds from three-point range to tie but missed the mark.
Brandon Beavers led Lawrence Tech (7-6, 4-4 WHAC) with 27 points and 12 rebounds while Alejandro Gonzalez added 19 more.
Lourdes (10-1, 6-1) remains home on Saturday afternoon to host Madonna. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m. inside the Ebeid Rec Center.
