No. 14 Lourdes scored the first 14 points of overtime to cap a 20-0 run as the Gray Wolves rallied to defeat Madonna 81-68 on Saturday afternoon inside the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center.
"I thought we played very unselfish today," head coach
Dennis Hopson said afterwards. "We shared the ball well."
Trailing by six with 3:32 to play in regulation,
Ethan Damerum (Cressage, England/Chornwood Riders H.S.) scored inside and
Stephen Coleman Jr. (Toledo, Ohio/Hillcrest Prep H.S.) followed with a lay-in on the next possession to cut the deficit to two. Damerum then tied the game at 64 with 2:08 to play.
Neither team would score the rest of the second half, as Lourdes held Madonna without a field goal for the final 5:04 of regulation.
"Stephen Coleman was excellent, and Ethan gave us some good minutes today," Hopson added.
Lourdes started the overtime period with back-to-back three-pointers by
Jackie Harris (Toledo, Ohio/St. Francis de Sales H.S.) and the Gray Wolves scored the first 14 points of the extra session to put the game away. The Gray Wolves were a perfect 5-for-5 from the floor, including the two triples, and went 5-for-6 from the free throw line over the extra five minutes.
Madonna finally broke through in overtime with 1:20 to play, ending an 8:44 stretch without a basket from the floor.
The Gray Wolf defense was sharp early as well. The Crusaders made just one of their first 16 shots from the floor and committed nine turnovers as Lourdes built a 15-3 lead 11 minutes into the game. Madonna got hot late in the half, making five of their last three-point attempts to battle back, pulling even at 30 at halftime.
Neither school led by more than four in the second half until Madonna went on a quick 6-0 run to take the 60-54 lead, setting the stage for the game's final five minutes.
Harris led Lourdes with a double-double, scoring 16 points while grabbing 11 rebounds.
Shaunn Monroe (Charleston, W. Va./Fairborn [Ohio] H.S.) added 16 points while filling the stat sheet. He grabbed nine rebounds, handed out seven assists, and registered seven steals.
Coleman finished the game with 14 points while
Joey Holifield (Toledo, Ohio/Cardinal Stritch H.S.) scored 11 points while grabbing eight rebounds and handing out five helpers.

The Gray Wolves defense held the Crusaders to just 34.3% shooting for the game while forcing 20 turnovers.
