GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (LourdesAthletics.com) -- The Lourdes University men's soccer team enjoyed a 2-nil road victory at Aquinas College Saturday, Oct. 19. The Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference victory improved the Gray Wolves league record to 6-2-1, good for third in the conference standings. Their overall record sits at 7-6-2 for the 2024 season.
"A really good team performance," said head coach Matt Johnson. "We got away from our identity against Concordia, and I felt this game we got back to what we need to do in order to be successful - found our rhythm and had an excellent stretch. We need to do a better job of putting the game away once we have a lead, but overall we're very pleased with the performance," he states.
"The big challenge in front of us is with first place Madonna coming to us on Wednesday, but if we can play the way we did today, we'll give ourselves a strong chance," he finished.
Upperclassmen Ibrahim Akl scored the game-winning goal early in the second half, finishing off a perfectly placed pass from Martin Coronel to give the Gray Wolves a 1-0 lead over the host Saints.
Coronel assisted again, this time on a shot from transfer Zack Meunier-Gorman, doubling Lourdes' advantage to 2-0. Aquinas was unable to respond and fell to the visiting Gray Wolves 2-nil, earning senior goalkeeper Alex Brock his 10th clean sheet of his career.
