Men's Soccer Defeats Michigan-Dearborn on the Road

DEARBORN, Mich. (LourdesAthletics.com) – The Lourdes University men's soccer team secured a commanding 3-0 victory against the University of Michigan-Dearborn on Saturday afternoon. The win highlights the Gray Wolves' strong performance and improves their overall record to 8-6-3 for the season and 7-2-2 in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference action, good for third in the WHAC standings.

"Good team win," said Head Coach Matt Johnson. "We challenged the group to maintain our level after a good performance in a challenging game on Wednesday versus Madonna, and I thought we did a great job of handling the game, and controlling the tempo, and taking our chances".

"Dearborn is well coached and probably a bit unfortunate to have the record they have, so credit to our guys for the overall performance. Great to see Jannik on the score sheet as well - he has a ton of quality in front of goal, but has been hampered by injuries, so good to see him sharp and hopefully finding some confidence," coach finished.

The visiting Gray Wolves took control early, with Ibrahim Akl scoring the opening goal unassisted in the ninth minute of the match. Lourdes maintained their momentum into the second half, and in the 55th minute, Jannik Hofmann found the back of the net with an assist from Martin Coronel, extending their lead to 2-0.

Just a minute later, Hoffman struck again, this time with assistance from Breno Queiroz, solidifying the Gray Wolves' commanding performance at 3-0.

In goal, senior Yianni Kanellopoulos earned a clean sheet, making four saves to keep the Wolverines at bay. The defense held strong throughout the match, ensuring a dominant victory as the Gray Wolves continue their push for a successful season.

Match Notes:
  • The Gray Wolves currently stand third in the WHAC standings with their 7-2-2 league record.
  • With eight season wins, the team has earned more wins than it did in the previous season with six. Additionally, the 2024 campaign marks just the third season with eight-plus wins and the first since 2021. Both the 2021 and 2020 squads finished with nine victories overall.
