Men's Wrestling Kicks Off Season with Strong Showings at Pepsi Patriot Open

Rodriguez Finishes Fourth at 133 Pounds, McKinley Competes Strongly at 141 Pounds in Season Opening Tournament

CORBIN, KY. (LourdesAthletics.com) -- Lourdes University wrestling competed at the Pepsi Patriot Open, hosted by the University of the Cumberlands in Corbin, Kentucky. The team demonstrated strong efforts throughout the tournament, with several wrestlers recording notable victories, including junior Nick Rodriguez, who finished fourth in the Open - 133 class, and junior Cole McKinley, who also showcased his skills in the Open - 141 class.

The event was divided into two brackets per weight class, one for freshmen and sophomores and the other an open division.

Rodriguez, competing in the Open - 133 class, had a strong tournament, finishing with a record of 5 wins and 2 losses. In the championship rounds, he began with a victory over Tyler Evans from Bellarmine, winning by decision with a score of 14-7. He then secured an impressive technical fall over Tyrique Simms from Midway University, winning 19-3. However, Rodriguez faced a tough challenge in the quarterfinals against Luke Rioux from Indiana Tech, where he lost in sudden victory, 8-5. Rodriguez moved to the consolation bracket, where he continued to excel. He won by major decision against Luke Roberts from Bluefield State, with a score of 15-3, and followed that up with a solid decision victory over Angel Banda from Reinhardt University, winning 7-2. In the consolation semifinals, he advanced by medical forfeit over Randy Frailey from Siena Heights University. However, in the 3rd Place Match, Rodriguez was edged out by Chandlar Akins from Cumberland KY, who won by decision, 9-6.

McKinley competed in the Open - 141 class. In the championship rounds, he began by winning by fall over Dakota Quinlan (Unattached-RCU) in 5:41. He followed this with a fall over Garrett Koestel from Lindsey Wilson in just 23 seconds. McKinley continued his success in the quarterfinals, pinning Frankie Font from Life in 1:57. In the semifinals, McKinley lost to Jordan Mitchell from Life by decision, 11-8. Moving to the consolation bracket, he won by decision against Eli Peyton from Cumberland KY, with a score of 5-4. In the 3rd Place Match, McKinley was defeated by Elijah Anthony (Unattached), who won by major decision, 13-4.

Also contributing points to the team were several other wrestlers: Roman Cordoba (Fresh/Soph 125) scored 6.0 team points; Ayden Wilson (Fresh/Soph 174) scored 7.0 team points; Derick Coleman (Open 165) scored 3.5 team points; Carter Kroll (Open 197) scored 6.0 team points; and Ty Cobb (Open 285) scored 3.0 team points.
